: Help with my roof marker lamps . . .

Well, the summer monsoon season has finally hit the Houston area, and we've been getting heavy rains nearly every afternoon. For the past couple of days, my overhead mini-console tray has had several ounces of water in it. Considering that the center triple roof marker lamp is directly above the console, I'm assuming that the center lamp gasket is at fault, but since there are the two outer marker lamps, plus the XM and On-Star antennas as well, I suppose they could be leaking and the water could "traveling" between the roof panels and leaking into the console as well. The headliner is NOT damp anywhere.

Any advice? I called the dealer to see about gaskets for the roof marker lamps, and GM in all it's wisdom does not sell the gasket by itself, you must purchase the entire marker lamp assembly!

Thanks in advance!

Use a phillips screwdriver and remove the lenses. Check for dirt and debris under the roof markers, then apply a nice bead of outdoor silicon (found at Lowes or HomeDepot) and re-assemble the light.

There will be two holes for the screws as well as one hole for the wire. As long as you get ample silicone under there and around each hole, you should fix any leaking light problem.

If I recall correctly, the way the onstar and XM antennas are mounted, there is a miminal change of leaking there. You have to pull the headliner loose to get to the nuts for the bolts that hold them on.

There also is a slight possibility that your windshield seal is leaking.

I'd reseal the lights.

Do you have a sunroof?? If it is not closed all the way, water will leak down and right into the upper console. (happend to my dad's Tahoe)

sounds like warranty work to me.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions guys!

No sunroof, and since the windshield is OEM, I highly doubt that it's the problem.

I believe that Andrew's suggestions make the most sense. I'll remove the center roof marker lamp, clean and reseal the holes and see what happens.

Warranty repair is out of the question for me! I'd rather have a water leak than let some dealership monkey loose on my truck! No offense to those here who are dealership techs, I just know what I see - time after time - here at MY shop after a customer has taken their vehicle in for warranty repairs.

I had this same problem. When I pulled the center marker light off I found no sealant between the rubber gasket and the lens and could see where water had been coming in. I did the silicon fix mentioned above and have had no problems since.

Oops - this post reminded me that I never posted my fix!

Just snugged all the screws on my center marker lamp - a couple of them required nearly a full turn - and no more leaks, thank goodness! And we've had some monsoons lately.
