Is The Fram Oil Filter 9100 any good for THe LLY Duramax? I just installed one and have read a few horry stories regarding this filter. This is the 3rd oil change on the truck. I don't want to take any chances.

I just purchased a fleetguard in case I have to change the oil fitler.

Can you change just the oil filter without loosing a lot of oil?

I don't think you'll find many Fram oil filter fans around here....
You'll lose ~1 quart of oil if you do decide to remove the filter and put a different unit on.

I've heard the pleats in the filter like to fall apart.

I had on blow out on me at about 20º below zero. No fun changing it in the cold.
That said, you'll probably be alright this time of year, but switch to an AC Delco or Baldwin, Hastings, or Wix next time.

Did you change the rear end fluids and fuel and tranny spin on filters yet ?

You should before you leave if you haven't already.

Have a nice trip

I haven't done the rear end or fuel filter yet. Truck only has 9,500 miles on it. Tranny spin on was done at 3k. I plan on changing rear end, tranny, and fuel this fall before truck hibernates for the winter. All amsoil going in this winter.

If the fuel filter hasn't been changed yet, it's over due. Ours gets changed with the oil, if not before. We go about every 5,000 miles on it.

I would strongly recommend changing the rear end fluid before you go.

If you do a search of "rear end fluid" or "grape juice" you will find plenty of reading.
Espically how everyones fluid seems to come low from the factory.

It's not a hard change, theres a drain plug and fill plug so you don't even have to remove the rear end cover. Buy a good Synthetic gear lube.

The fuel filter is getting due for a change too. Manual recommends 15,000 miles I think, but thats assuming the fuel in your area is a good quality. You could have poor fuel at your service station so unless your sure of the fuel quality in your area I would recommend a change and cut the old filter open after you get it out and inspect the pleats to see what kind of shape there in so you have a refrence for the next time you have to change the filter.

And personally I believe the spin on tranny should be changed every 5,000 to keep it clean too. A few dollars spent for piece of mind.

Since your going on a trip a few miles from home a little work now might save you from a headache on the road.

Good Luck

I would have changed everything earlier just because it's a new truck. It's hard to judge the fuel quality up here, so we change it more often. We have the new duel pleated one, so we're going to go longer this time. It's just easier to remember to do everything when the DIC tells you to change the oil, that way you didn't forget any fluids. Diesel Dragon is right, changing the rear fluid isn't hard. Filling it can be fun though...lol

I'm not sure if you've seen this before, but it's a very good guideline. http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33348
