Like the title says..I've always heard that you can leave diesels running for hours with no problems. With this 100 degree weather we are having here day in and out I have been leaving my truck running for most of the day and just wanted to make sure other than wasting fuel I was not hurting anything. Thanks..

Im no expert by far, but Ive heard that if you never shut a diesel off it would never break! Just a figure of speech is my guess.
Someone on here has much more knowledge than myself tho

Keeping a modern diesel ideling is not good, the temps inside the combustion chamber gets so low that some unburnt fuel collects and dilutes the motor oil.Motor oil getting diluted by fuel is a problem that newer diesels that have DPFs and regen cycles.Even Amsoil has started saying the extended oil change should not be done with LMMs because of this.

Ok, well what about mine with no DPF?

No dpf , no problem. Check the high mileage thread where a hotshotter named dutch pilot sleeps in his in winter, no ill effects.

^^No DPF, no problem. My only concern (with no evidence) would be the transmission clutches. I am not an expert but even in park the internals are still moving and at idle the pump isn't flowing a lot of fluid. Just a thought.

Really the only issue a person might have is the egr cooler would get plugged from all the soot. Just make sure you clean it out every so often.:D

All it would be is more fuel consumption otherwise don't sweat it.

cylinder washdown is not a problem on the Dmax? Cummins guys always had the high idle switch to crank up the R's to avoid washdown. Just curious, the Dmax doesn't have this issue?

If idling for hours kills a diesel engine then tens of thousands of state and county highway trucks would be sitting dead on the side of the road all over this country...

your issue with the newer engines is with the emmisions and the unburnt gasses being put back into be reburned again. This may cause excess fuel in the engine block and i bad enough with worn injectors cylinder washdown.
