I am in the process of adding the steerimg wheel controls to my 04 3500 crew cab and I was hoping someone could answer a quick question for me. I have located a new clockspring for a real good price problem is it is the one for the yukon, suburban, denalli etc. and not the silverado HD. there is only one number in the two part #'s that is different the one for the non HD is 26101829 and the one for the HD is 26101828 does anyone know what the difference is between the two and can it be made to work

My advise was not correct. Ben has it right (see below)

Ahh ha!! There actually is a good reason for having two different clocksprings...MAKE SURE you get an HD one. You see, our HD's have the older, single stage airbags (note how we dont have the passenger sensing system either...the little on/off airbag light in the rear view mirror), where as the light duties have had dual-stage airbags since 2003. Basically dual stage airbags are identical except they have a "smarter" SRS system and two heating coils in the inflator modules. If the SRS system decides that an impact is severe, it sends power to both coils, thereby setting off BOTH pyrotechnic charges in each airbag, and inflating with a high force. If it is a less severe collision, it only sends power to one coil and only one charge is blown. Only one charge goes off, and the bag inflates with less force. If you use a non-HD clockspring in our HD's it will surely mess something up with the SRS/airbag system, and in the worst case, the driver side airbag would not even inflate in a collision...but the light would come on before that to tell that something is amiss (the driver side inflator modual is offline).

EDIT: for safety's sake, I also would buy the clockspring new, as it is in integral part of the drivers-side airbag working properly!

By chance are you writing down a step by step procedure for this??? I am interested in changing my steering wheel out and would really like to have a reference. :help:
I am following the install procedures on this sight do a search for steering wheel controls and scroll down through the threads and you find what you are looking for. If I knew how to post a link I would do it sorry.

The Chevy Avalanche Fan Club of North America has plenty of people there who ahve done the mod...a couple fellows have a complete write-up over there. www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com Go to FORUMS then...i think its under audio/video mods IIRC...or do a search. Very helpful and frinedly people over there, even if you dont have an Avalanche (hey we're all GM family right?)
