I just bought a 1999 GMC 3500HD dump truck with 84-k miles. Turbo Diesel, 5 speed tranny.
When shifting into 3rd gear I get a grind ever so often, guessing the syncro. is bad or going bad.
Is this a HARD fix? Replace tranny or is there a kit or something for them?

Most likely a bad syncro, probably someone gear jamming with it under a load. Personally i would run it if it isnt too bad, be sure you are depressing the clutch all the way too. If you chose to rebuild i believe it requires special tools to get the main shaft out. Maybe someone will chime in to verify.

Thanks, I will more than likely drive it like it is awhile then fix it. I will only be using this maybe once a week or so. A local tranny shop said they could do the bad syncro for around 400 to 450 or cold do the complete tranny for about 800 + clutch if I wanted to replace it at the smae time. So my thinking is drive it like it is till the clutch gets weak then do everything at one time.
