: Power MODS for 2005 LLY???
kodiak 07-17-2005, 08:48 PM Will the same MODS work for the Medium Duty trucks that work on the smaller trucks?? And, how much HP/TQ can you "safely" add before having to modify the auto tranny?? I really need to kick this pig up a notch but, I don't want to shell out for a transmission upgrade right now. Are there any options out there?? Thanks
Big Angry 07-17-2005, 08:59 PM My buddy's 4500 GMC rollback does pretty well with the predator on 65. He tows pretty much daily and really likes it, says it "smoothed it out" and doesn't downshift hardly anymore when he's towing. I would really really like to get a Pyro on it (just for my own satisfaction) and we are going to, just haven't got time to do it. He says it shifts smoother now as well.
kodiak 07-17-2005, 10:00 PM Thanks Big A. I am looking for gauges myself before I do anything rash. Probably get the typical EGT/Boost/Tranny combo. I have used Westtach gauges in the past, and have had good luck with those. Plus the price is good too. I have seen Hoot's EGT probe placement on the exhaust manifold but, having owned a PSD before, I am looking where to attach the boost on the Kodiak???
Big Angry 07-17-2005, 10:11 PM Don't know if the boost guage for him is in the plans just yet, but if it would be, we will get some pics for ya.
I just read a post that the Edge/Attitude does not work on Medium Duty trucks because the wiring harness is different. Any comments?
kodiak 08-14-2005, 10:43 PM I have had the Edge Attitude on my 05 Kodiak for about a week. Only thing is, I cannot adjust the tire size to accurately display speed. No big deal since I already have the factory speedo. As far as the wiring harness, I had to remove the airbox to get to the 2 places the Edge installs. But, everything snapped right into place and seems to work fine. Took all of 10 minutes to install and about another 5 minutes for the pyro probe.
roidman81 08-14-2005, 11:06 PM SO how does it run? how does it go ? milage??? Come on...
kodiak 08-15-2005, 11:29 AM I was really concerned about "fragging" the tranny or EGT's being out of control. Edge says its module monitors the EGT and backs off if you get to a limit that you set. I cannot get it to overheat at all on levels 1-3. I am working here in Vegas and 1230 is the highest I have seen so far. I also have the edge set to monitor tranny slippage. So far, I can't get it to back down because of slippage either. Keep in mind, this is only on the 1-3 levels and I have yet to tow the 5th wheel. The driveability has improved dramatically. It actually has enough power to get out of its own way.
I am leaving today for the next jobsite in Olympia, WA. This will be the real test.....Pulling my 40' Carriage. On a side note, I will probably end up replacing the stock muffler as it really looks to be restrictive.
Call me crazy....but, the last 2 tanks of diesel have been 12.2 MPG. I cannot say if the truck is breaking in "7500 miles" and getting better MPG or if I can attribute the increase to the Edge.
If anyone is interested, I got an unbelievable deal on the EDGE too. Lots less than I have seen on the internet. I am not sure if we are allowed to post prices on this forum, so PM me if you want the number. I was pleasantly suprised.
roidman81 08-15-2005, 08:52 PM any idea how your doing dead head?
kodiak 08-15-2005, 10:39 PM I was running around all over Vegas not towing anything and was knocking down 12.2MPG.
Now that I am on the road again, this time pulling my 5th wheel, it looks like an even 9.9 MPG over 2 tankfuls. This is taking I-15 North from Vegas and I am spending the night in Provo, UT.
Pulled on level 2 and never got below 55MPH and never got the EGT's over 1350. I can live with that!! Usually, hills like what I was on today, would have been 45MPH MAX and alot of fan noise not to mention the downshifting the tranny would have been doing.
Average speed was about 62-65 and like I said, 55 MPH on the hills.
I still think that losing the muffler would be a good idea. I can still get 1250+ degrees pouring the coal to it. Maybe bumping the boost up a bit would keep the EGT's down a tad???? I believe the highest boost I saw was 22-23LBS.
DURAtotheMAX 08-16-2005, 11:18 AM Ahh you probably have the newer version of the Edge LLY which caps the boost at stock level; ~22PSI. My LLY Edge is the first revision that came out, which didnt cap boost. Getting on the highway it'll rocket past ~29 PSI!!! It once went to 31, but threw an overboost code and "limped" the engine...not the tranny, the engine.

kodiak 08-16-2005, 09:18 PM Yep, New version. Just need to find a work around for the boost thing. Nothing off the charts, but a boost cap of say....26-28LBS would be great.
latemodelracer2 08-17-2005, 01:49 AM i read on one part of this board of a device that will be out soon to raise soley the boost shoud be good for the egt problem with my predator
kodiak 08-17-2005, 02:06 AM That will be great! I don't really have a problem with EGT's, "everyone says the LLY runs hot" I just don't like the thoughts of 1250 degrees when a bit more boost would cool it down to about 950. I would be more comfortable.
Has anyone had the truck run hot yet? I have an 05 4500 LLY, no cat and 4 inch exhaust/w EZ. It will run the temps right on up to the red pulling. Any one else seen this? I was running EZ on level 2 , and 1 .No diff in temp overs. It takes along time to cool down. Dealer replaced fan clutch, helped some.
kodiak 08-17-2005, 10:31 PM What are you considering hot?? And are you pulling a load, or are you running empty when you run it into the red???
The past 3 days I have been pulling a 40' camper from Las Vegas to Olympia, WA. Lots of hills and highway speeds. I can get it to 1300 if I really keep it hammered. But, 1230 is about what I get if I let it ease back down to 55MPH and not try to keep it at 65MPH. I still have the stock exhaust, with the cat and the muffler.
Running hot is anything over 230. I am pushing it right to thr red zone. As temp increases and oil pressure drops the engine begins to defuel and road speed falls fast. Sure ,back off of the go pedal and ease along the side of the road till it cools off,but thats not why I bought the truck. I have had 2 , 1 ton duallies. An 01 and 02, both with duramax and allies. They both pulled this same trailer loaded the same weight up the same mountain 30 mph faster and only saw temps up to 220 but fell fast as the fan clutch came on and cooled things off.
Oh, I am talking about water temps. Sorry I went off and did not give you an ansewer.
