I just sold my ppe and will soon be going efi. I have a question maybe you pros can answer. Is it possible to get an 2002 lb7 to sound quiet like the Lmm through tuning? Or just getting that pilot injection or whatever its called to make the engine run smoother? Thanks in advance

well seeing how they are almost the same engine, i would imagine that you would be able to. The LBZ only uses one pilot while the LMM uses 3 sometimes. you can manually activate more pilots on the LBZ if you wish, but that seems like a lot of work and more wear and tear on the injector to me if that's all you want is a more quiet engine.

ALL of the DURAMAX's have pilot injection in them to begin with. And no, you will never get a 2002 to be quiet like a LMM, it's just not gonna happen. There are to many differences between the two for this to work. LB7's have bigger injectors, higher compression, NON VGT turbo, and just less overall refinement. You can quiet it down SOME, but not a whole lot. And in doing so a bad idle can accompany it as I have played around with this some in the BURB. I got the engine to idle reasoneably quiet, but it would begin to idle lope after about 30 seconds. After about 5 minutes it would get a heavy diesel smell from the exhaust, and then some whiteish smoke.

Thanks for your responses guys, So pretty much just let it be then right? Okay then how about if i go the other route. Can you make the Lb7 rumble more? I dont mean the idle lope, i mean when your stepping on it.

Decent tuning using the timing calculator will definately give the LB7 a throaty sound and lots of turbo whistle. Everytime I run my DSP2 tune when tuning I swear something is wrong with the engine because it's so quiet under power. My daily driver tune will definately talk at yeah:D. I can drive past a wall or building and roll down the passenger side windows, and you won't believe the deep growl it echos back at me:cool:.
