I don't know that much about exhaust braking, but I raised the question a few months ago about engine braking down hills. Advice given was thoughts about tranny temps. If the TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) is not engaged, then your tranny temps are going to rise. Depending upon how long and hard you braking (down a long incline, etc) you may be cookin' that tranny.

Seemed like general thought was brake pads were cheaper than the wear on the powertrain. Just a thought, no serious data or science to back the thought either, but a thought just the same.

I haven't ever found any info on one for a 6.5TD. But I gave up looking after about a hour or two.

Somebody I *think* makes them. I just saw them on a banner ad, either here, or another forum, but I don't recall the name, or *if* it applied to a 6.5 or Duramax.

Someone else posted the 6.5 doesn't like the torque being applied to it from braking. Don't recall exact thread or reference, may need to search.

I couldnt find anything on the Bankspower site for the 6.5TD, but I did find info on related transmisson temps.

"Banks also offers an optional electronic device called the SmartLock™ that automatically locks the torque converter clutch at a specified point and raises transmission line pressure while braking for improved holding capacity. By preventing excess slippage, the SmartLock also reduces transmission fluid temperature while braking, which greatly prolongs transmission life. GM and Chevrolet ’01-’03 Duramax diesel trucks already have a similar acting Tow/Haul feature built into their automatic transmissions and do not require the SmartLock module."

so I guess it does overheat the tranny if not delt with.

i think BD has/had an exhaust brake for the 6.5td's... it was a remote mount... bolted to the end of the downpipe i believe?
