: I don't think its "upcoming" anymore.
cub124 07-19-2010, 04:07 PM Last I heard GM won't be fallowing through with the 4.5l engines in the half ton and suvs. In the latest issue of diesel power it shows a guy who found one on e bay and is putting it in a corvette but other than that they are done with them.
kilo6490 07-19-2010, 10:56 PM No, that was just because when GM initially shelved the project, the parted and sold a bunch of the engines they already had built. Thats how Tony got some on here i believe. I'm pretty sure GM is still gonna do the 4.5. They've already talked about the plant in NY thats gonna produce them. They would have a huge market for 1/2 ton Diesels i believe.
CJATE 07-19-2010, 11:13 PM man I hope they put them in a Tahoe
got-h2o 07-19-2010, 11:17 PM Yeah Tony B was selling a bunch of them a while back. I thought I read on here somewhere that it will be sooner than later. Not sure though.
Dennis_PHX 07-20-2010, 06:24 PM I read yesterday in Trailer Life that GM IS continuing the 4.5L. I'll get a copy of the article and post it tomorrow.
skeeter1486 07-20-2010, 10:17 PM Although, it would be awesome and I hope I am wrong, I just don't think the economics of the idea will let this happen. The government's current tax makes most diesel (outside full-size trucks) not feasible due to the increased fuel costs and the increase in sticker price that goes along with the engine.
Dennis_PHX 07-21-2010, 10:16 AM Here is the article from the latest issue of Trailer Life. 2nd paragraph under General Motors News. The first is easier to read.
railguy 07-21-2010, 11:33 AM My first post here. I've been driving a GMC 6.5 1/2 Ton 4x4 for years (as well as a Jeep Liberty CRD). I would love to see the 4.5, and I think GM is making a big mistake by not offering it if, in fact, it is "ready for prime time."
That said, I recently contacted GMC about the 4.5 and got the exact response that I expected: a regurgitation of the 4.5 project being shelved during GM's financial troubles and "no plans announced" for making the 4.5 available.
That's too bad. If the rumored fuel economy figures are correct, the 4.5 would get nearly 40% better highway economy than I can achieve with my 6.5, with substantially better performance. That would likely be enough incentive for me to consider purchasing a 4.5. But, until then, I will just keep driving my 6.5--a lost sale for GM. No wonder they're in financial trouble.
mmangels22 07-21-2010, 12:54 PM It will come out just be as patient as possible.

I would love a diesel Suburban with a 4.5 and a 6 speed. Their mock up at SEMA claimed 29 mpg.
If they ever launch it pricing will be critical. People will be willing to spend an extra 2-4k on the diesel option but not 7-9k when they can get a 5.3 that will get 19-22 MPG. 7-9k Buys a lot of fuel.
Yes, I know there will always be enthusiasts who will buy diesel regardless for better lower end torque, effiancy, and better resale but American consumers are notoriously cheap.
cub124 07-22-2010, 09:01 AM yeah i hope they are still planning on making them, the numbers are great!! 310hp, 520ft lbs of torque and almost 30mpg!! thats only 10mpg under what my sisters honda civic gets on the highway and its a 4 banger with less than 200hp!
Black05LLY 07-26-2010, 09:21 AM What I really want is a Dodge Dakota size GM made truck with a 3.0 to 4.0 V6 - big enough to tow 6K, 2000 lb payload and can take a 4 X 8 sheet of plywood with the tailgate up. Datsun used to make a 1 ton midget truck. No reason we can't get good payload in something smaller. That size V6 could produce 400 ft-lb, be even cheaper to make and get better mileage. Fuel mileage is dependent on frontal area among other things and the new GMs look like someone drew a grill on a sheet of plywood. Too much frontal area. GM started designing this when the economy was in hyper drive and now it does not make quite as much sense. First reputable company that makes this size truck and I'm in. Not so sure about a new, very expensive truck that is even bigger and more blunt than the one I have, only with a smaller motor.

I think a significant chunk of the $7-9K diesel option is/was the Allison. That won't be an issue for the 4.5L.
bchaney 08-02-2010, 06:48 PM i think it would be cool as well but i wouldnt buy one new the price would be crazy high
sikk50 08-03-2010, 12:04 AM I'd get one after college. I miss my '05 1/2 ton prerunner, and would love to do it to a diesel!
cub124 08-03-2010, 03:12 AM i wish i could afford a duramax in college! lol
1953drtelco 08-04-2010, 10:54 AM I just read an article in Motor Trend and it seems GM has the 4.5 back on the table. Besides the 1500 series trucks, it's even being considered as being offered in the 2500 series truck as well. The 4.5 power matches the power of the first 2001 DMAX...so it would seem to be a great option for the majority of truck buyers. Either way, my 05 is paid for and I can't afford a new truck unless I can finance with zero interest for 20 years....
