: Best additive to prevent coking of injector tips?
CAJUN86 07-18-2010, 08:40 AM Just replaced injectors under special policy at 149,000 miles, total miles 109,000. Looked at my old tips and they looked new, no signs of wear just all coked up. I use Schaffer's additive at every fill up, but I think I need to try something else with better cleaning properties. Maybe I will start using trans fluid every now and then, any suggestions?

Just to let ya know-->Transmission Fluid is not created to be burnt. So it's really not a good diesel additive. Your best bet for cleaning and lubrication is some sort of biodiesel.
RonJT 07-18-2010, 08:45 PM biodiesel will probably just make the problem worse...the problem is coking of injector tips not wear on the injectors.
This is the fundamental problem facing LB7 owners...how to make the injectors tips and insides last...ie preventing coking/carbon build up.(now that bosch has redesigned/hardened the injectors)
I believe it is combo of issues that relate to better air flow, changes in moderate load programing and ditching any egr.
There is also a thread on periodic cleaning(injectors installed) now offered by some dealers...this is probably going to be a big help.
jettech 07-18-2010, 11:35 PM stanadyne performance formula in every tank for me.
JD4440 07-18-2010, 11:54 PM Your member base is going to be rather limited for people that know their additive reduced coking of their injectors as most will never see them unless they do the job themselves or install bigger tips. Schaeffers or stanadyne will most likely give you your best shot not withholding PS and Howes.
When I changed my nozzles at 50k I had ran stanadyne since new to 40k and my fuel supplier adds Schaeffers into his bulk since then. When I pulled the injectors they were as clean as could be and I've been at 450-500hp since 1000 miles and used it pretty often. To me the Stanadyne did it's part. I'll know on the Schaeffers when I pull the motor one of these days to build.
RonJT 07-19-2010, 02:38 PM I think the original poster said he used schaeffers at every fill up and the tips were coked up.
I use stanadyne and the truck does run better...I mix with two stroke and it runs even better. But I do not know how that equates with keeping the tips as clean as long as possible.

Are all current injectors from GM dealers the "redesigned/hardened" ones?

Can you let me know your results?
Thanks

Talked to a guy while filling up after I watched him pore in a quart of trans fluid. He's been doing it since day one and has 285,000 miles on original injectors with a 2002 model year. Seems like something is working right.

The only problem with that is up here with us in colder climates is that it gels easier- ask me how I know (TWICE, lol). I run Stanadyne myself-
RonJT 07-23-2010, 10:37 PM That is not the first instance that I have read of ATF...1 qt per fill....and the owner is still on the original injectors. Last one was on this site...175000 miles original injectors 1qt per fill since new.
Ace_of_Chaos 07-24-2010, 11:28 AM I have heard of running some ATF on older diesels, but I wouldn't on the newer injection systems. I am more inclined to use SeaFoam. I will probably put some in a new fuel filter at replacement as suggested by Tolliwacker.
Diaric 07-24-2010, 11:36 AM 20 years ago ATF burnt and cleaned well. the ATF of today does not, it leaves bad deposits. do not use it.
seafoam is designed to remove coke from 2 stroke engines, it may help here, but who knows
RonJT 07-25-2010, 11:25 PM you know all this tribal knowledge of ATF....old days good...today no good...not sure about that. I really do not know the answer but if ATF is so bad why do I come across threads where the owner has used it faithfully and has incredible mileage on the injectors.
By definition, if what people say about atf is true, there should be zero cases of that happening.
Black05LLY 07-26-2010, 09:41 AM Lots of great info on the internet AND lots of lies. My research comes up with Stanadyne Lubricity Formula. As I remember, it is strictly for cleaning and lubrication. I used it in every tank on my 6.5 and at 120K injectors still good. So far so good on my LLY but only at 58K. Lubricity formula was at one time recommended for the 6.5 by GM as I recall. Maybe more for the injector pump than the injectors.
RonJT 07-26-2010, 04:32 PM Your LLY does not count.....at least to me. Since the LLY and up came out the injector issues have basically gone away.
The ATF stories(lies..) have all been related to the injector eater LB7. And most people who have been replacing theirs have been reporting completely fouled up tips(including me) when they do. So the question here is whether or not adding something in the fuel for the LB7 will help with a known problem on the LB7 injectors coking up.

Coked up tips for me also, I believe there is truth to the cleaning properties of using ATF.

It is also designed to be used with ( or in ) your motor oil. I don't know about this stuff, seems like it good everything under the sun.
