Well, in reality, it is not connected at all, and I dont have any of the old parts. Anyone know how I can go about getting a new line and connecting it up properly? Can I just use one from Advance or Napa? Also I am not sure where anything should hook up to and from it. Any and all help is appreciated.

The speedo cables just clip onto the back of the speedo head in the dash and run out through the firewall and down to the T-case where they connect to the speedo drive gear.

he has a 90, would that not be a magnetic pick up, electronic speedo?

Oh, I missed that 1990 part. A lot of help I am! haha

I think you may be right Diaric. It is likely a magnetic pickup. In that case, I am don't know a lot about those...I haven't had to fix one yet!

Read a few other posts on this topic. Seems pretty easy.. my question is when I take my cluster off, the only thing I see is a pin connector (I will take a picture if needed). Do I have to get to all the wires and everything from under the dash, or is there a way to do it from the top? Also, where is the best place to find the sensor and cable(s) that are needed?

Thanks

I'd start at the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission. Verify the wires are still connected and not oil-soaked, etc. Does your odometer work, or no? If no, you either have a bad speed sensor or bad wiring connection.

If the odometer works but speedo does not, you most likely have a bad speedo. It can be removed from the cluster without pulling the cluster from the truck, but it's easier (as you've discovered) just to pull the cluster. If it is the speedo, I *think* any '88-'90 speedo from a C/K truck will plug in. The ratio correction is part of the cluster motherboard rather than the speedo itself.

That works for me. I will take a look and let you all know if what I see and what I do to fix it up. Thanks for all the input.

Odometer does not work.
I climed under the truck today and did not see anything that looked like what I thought a speedo cable would look like. Where on the Trans does it connect? I was on the driver side and saw a small connector with two wires coming out of it, but I thought it the speedo cable was a thicker metal rapped line. Maybe I am wrong, would not be the first time today!

Thanks for all the help everyone.

2WD or 4WD?

Passenger side tail shaft of the transfer case is where your cable or sender is gonna hook up.

That's going to be the connector for your TCC lock-up.

I dont think that I looked back far enough on the Trans. I will give it another go later this week. Thanks so much.

ok.. does anyone have a photo? I have looked online and I dont see anything like what some of the images that are out there look like. I also dont see any kind of cable coming from the firewall that looks like a speedo cable. Can someone post a pic of that as well.

If I in fact do not have one currently connected, how do I connect up a new one? or does anyone have a link to a how-to article for this?

Thanks,
Chuck

are you sure you use a cable and not a magnetic pick-up that would just have wires...on a 4x4 it will be on the transfer case rear output housing i think

No I am not sure. Anyone know a answer to that particular question?

You will not have a speedo cable. You will have a wiring connector on the transfer case... *unless* someone replaced the case with one that did not have the connector.

I don't even know if that's a possibility. *shrug*. I'll crawl under the truck when I get home and post a pic. The good news is, your cluster is probably OK based on this latest information...

Pictures of the vehicle speed sensor and wiring connector. This is at the drivers side of the transfer case.

289 - Thanks for the visual. I think that is the same connector I was talking about in an earlier post. No big deal. I am guessing all I need to do is make sure there is power going to the thing and if so, replace the sensor.

If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know.

my firends 95 dodge cummins has the same transfercase and conector. theyre very sensitive. i unplugged his to reroute the wires around the transfer case shift linkage and plugged it in with a very very small amount of dirt in the plug and the speedo was haywire. it was going from 0-max when you were doing 20. so unplug that and make sure the weather pak conector didnt get water or mud in it somehow.

Wouldn't you know it! If you actually had a fuse in the panel for it, it would work! Put in a new 15A fuse and now the speedo, odometer and tripometer are all online and working.
