: Window tint + factory tint = ?
lilwes278 07-17-2005, 06:36 AM I personally think the factory tint on my rear windows is too light. I'd like to get the equivalant of about 5% tint on clear glass. I'd also like to tint the front sides and maybe the windshield (the fronts will only be a 50% shade since I don't want to draw too much attention from the local PD). About what shade is the factory tint (I'm guessing about 35%)? Would 50% over the factory tint get the results I'm looking for, or would I need to go with a darker shade (like 35% or even 20%)? What shade have you guys put over the factory tint? And if you could, please post some pics of your windows.
TEXMudder 07-17-2005, 09:35 AM I had 5% put over my factory tint. Dark as all hell, but great for the kids in the car seats so that they dont sit there blinded by the sun. Pictures here:

lilwes278 07-17-2005, 12:56 PM Looks good, but a little too dark for me. I do a fair amount of night driving, plus IF my wife were to ever drive my truck, I don't want her backing over someone's Honda because she couldn't see through the tint.
TEXMudder 07-17-2005, 02:08 PM Yes its very dark but mine was done that way for the 2 kids under 2 years old... I have gotten used to it.
dmaxlover 07-17-2005, 02:50 PM If the tint on the rear windows say "deep tint" it is 20%
txguppy 07-17-2005, 06:15 PM Check CHP before tinting windshield, it may be illegal.

That is why there is an ASI line on the windshield, as long as you do not go below that I think you are ok.
fool32696 07-17-2005, 09:40 PM I had 20% put over the factory rear glass tint and it matches the 5% on the front window really good.
number9 07-17-2005, 09:50 PM Great timing. I started to post about this the other day and backed out. My 02 (bought used) has tint on front doors but is factory on sides and rear glass. It matches pretty well, but is FAR too light when looking at the rear of the truck you can see through it easy. My truck has graphite interior and I was kind of thinking 5% would be too dark. I am going to strip the front glass and doors and have clean 5% installed all the way around.
I know it will be dark, but I once had an S-10 with 2 layers of 5% on rear and doors with 35% all the way down on front glass with a 5% strip on top. THAT was dark. On the interstate at night when a car was beside me all I could see was the parking lights on it.
Bowtie Boy 07-17-2005, 10:06 PM I had my truck tinted with the legal limit tint locally which was 20% front and rear and it looks good. I have no problem seeing out at night, I also had the windshield tinted with a 50% to cut the glare and reduce the heat in the sun. A little thing my tint guy told me was the if you put the dark strip accross the front it is harder to tell it's tinted since it is lighter than the rest of the windows. Cops in the area are A**holes about tint and I haven't had any problems.(Knock on wood)
DuckhunterInTN 07-18-2005, 09:09 AM 20% seems to match the factory tinted windows. Anything lighter (higher %) does not match...but 20% is usually illegal for the front side windows.
dmaxlover 07-18-2005, 06:42 PM In Wisconsin 20% is illegal-:t on the front windows, but I did it anyway:ro)
lilwes278 07-19-2005, 12:38 AM Here in California, anything on the sides and anything lower than 6" from the top of the windshield is illegal. But I have VERY light-sensitive eyes, so I put 50% on the front sides of my '89 crewcab, and 5% on all the back windows. It's just right. Takes the glare off, but it's not too dark, and the cops don't even look at me. I was just trying to figure out what % to go with on the back so that it's dark (like 5%), but not completely blacked out. Looks like 20% should do the trick...
