Leaving for NH tommorrow for 2 wks towing 7500lb boat and trailer, decided to service rearend, found factory posi BROKEN:mad: !! Called dealer(its 5k out of warranty) and they said bring it in they'll take care of it:D ! I was under impression these trucks had a eaton hd posi but it is just a pos governor lock limited slip like the 1/2 tons use only bigger. Everyone needs to take a good look at this when servicing rearend,I didn't see it until I rotated the wheels on hoist. This truck hasn't had that hard of life yet to be broken already,Smitty

Sounds like you might have gotten a defective part.Your out of warranty already with a 04?

The Eaton locker in the GM HD pickup has taken a lot of abuse by many a members here.Yours is a exception

The Dodge Trac-Right differential will fit in our housing as Mopar uses the same axles.

Good luck

chevmiester's did something similar. Too many small internal parts. Some hold up and some grenade. Switch it out to the unit that's in the 03-up Dodge. No Joke. It fits. Nick (Diesel Power) and a few others have switched.

Just curious, but the pictures show what looks like rust. The close up looks like a rust line on the carrier. Was the differential wet? Did any water come out when you drained it? Was the fluid white or milky looking? If so, then I wouldn't blame the differential.
I would look to see if the differential vent line is disconnected. When launching a boat, the vent gets submerged. It can draw a surprising amount of water into the housing. This is because usually you have just driven to the lake, backed into the water with a warm rear axle housing and then submerged the housing in cool water. This causes the air in the housing to cool and contract. If the vent is below the water's surface, then water will be drawn in instead of air. It doesn't take very much water to cause real problems in any kind of differential. If it is salt water, then you really compound the problem.
To prevent this, some people have extended the vent line to a higher position, such as to the top of the bed, between the bed & cab.

Hopefully I am totally wrong in this case & the dealer will repair it for you.

Good Luck,

Britt

Yep. Mine died out of warranty too. It SUCKS that it is a POS 1/2 ton part in an HD Wrapper.... kind of like the Tie Rods....

The factory extends the vent to the gas tank filler area........as long as the seal is tight around the differential housing it should not draw any water in at all.................

It actually is a larger unit than what's in the 1/2 tons.

Britt,I just returned from my 2000 mile trip, the rear worked fine in its broken state although i kept my foot out of the gas and used 4 wheel drive on the wet roads coming thru the mountains of new hampshire and vermont. As far as rust, the picture is deceiving because of the light and gear oil clinging to housing, there is no rust at all in the housing or on the gears, the color just appears that way.Smitty

I am a distributer for randys ring and pinion(i rebuild rear ends as part of my transmission business and did a 3500$ buy in a few years ago). I called them this morning and YES the dodge and gm hd trucks after 02/03 share identical housings, the posi's are interchangeable.A replacement gm gov-lock would cost me just under 600$ and the dodge factory track-lock is 468$ plus you'd have to buy side bearings (18$ ea) as your not going to get them off the old posi. A amatuer could change it out in their driveway as you would only have to pull the floater axle shafts, cover, caps, swap the ring gear (as long as its not damaged) and reassemble, the back lash is set with rotating spanner nuts, not shims. My dealer says they will do it for free as my truck is a 04 just out of warranty so i'm not going to spend the coin and do it myself unless the story changes, hope this info helps anyone with similar problem.I think it got broke when powering out of some snow last winter,it didn't act broke,i only found the problem because i was changing oil in rear before going on my road trip,Smitty
