Looking to replace my "91" Exploder. I don't know much about diesels. But I always have wanted to try one. The problem that I have is that I can't make up my mind on whether I should buy the 41,000 mile 2002 Chevy 2500HD X-Cab Duramax 4x2 or a brand new gas Chevy of the same exact body type. I only drive my vehicle on occasional trips to deliver kids to school etc. At times I pull trailers from 2,000Lb to 6,500Lb but not anything over 100 miles. I would like to have the truck new with the Duramax but the general says nien(sp?).Used truck can probably be had for $20,000 (looks like it's in good shape) New gas truck costs $25000. Anybody out there had both gas and diesel in the same year and style? any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
Thanks

I haven't had the same years, but went from an 00 to an 03. From what you're describing it sounds like like a well equipped 1500 will suit your bill just fine. Diesels are work horses and meant to be used that way, or for people that drive excessive miles. I've put on over 48,000 in just over 2 years of ownership and my truck sits during the week in the summer months since I commute on 2 wheels as much as I can.
The Duramax package is a great overall vehicle with tons and power and comfort, however if you don't really need it, it's hard to justify the premium price. However, if it's more of a want then need, go for it, you only live once. Diesels also historically tend to hold value better than gasser's which is another consderation.
Victory Red,
Thanks for your thoughts. I considered a 1/2 tonner. My dad has had several over the last 20 years and the always seemed to be a little underpowered when it got down to the heavier loads but those were fords with 240s and 302s. Maybe a new half tonner with a new gen motor
would be great improvement over my dads trucks. Will give it more thought.
Thanks,
