How accurate are the reading on the DIC. My miles per gallon are all over the place.I drove into town and back on the same road, same distance, same speed, with no tail or head wind and the average consumption was 25 mpg in and 20 mpg back. I am curious how much faith I should put in the distance I can travel with fuel remaining indication. I am going on a trip were in one section it is 350 miles between service stations. I just bought my 05 GMC D-Max 2 monthes ago and this is my first diesel ever so I'm in a real learning curve, Everyone seems so knowledgable in this site and I am a little reluctent to ask too many questions and show what a real Nimrod I am when it comes to diesel engines.

dont feel bad, we have all had our first at one time.
dont hesitate to do a search for questions as they have already been anwered at least 14 times...
as for the DIC, if you have a programmer, it will be completely wrong. if not, who knows, i would go with hand figures to see how close your DIC is to reality. normally i get about 350-400 miles a tank, but, i usually fill up around 250.
for further questions, it would help if you could fill out your signature to let everybody know what your driving and what mods you have if any.
oh, and welcome to the sight. you will learn a bunch, i did.

I have "relied" on my DIC Range before. It seems fairly reliable. It uses the signal from the fuel gauge in its calculations. Mine went 410 miles this past weekend on one tank and the DIC said I still have 50 to go. When you get below 30 to go, it dings and says low fuel. My trip included about an hour at 80, a whole bunch of towns, and about 75 in between the towns. If you keep the speeds to around 65-70 and you start out full obviously, you will have no problem making the 350 mi (if you are running empty).
Don't worry about asking too many questions. We are here because we like our trucks and are happy to help. Some people get tired of the same old question. IE: fuel milage, injectors, will 285/75/16 fit without trimming, but they will most likely not bother you. This is the best forum I have ever been too, everyone is just willing to help!
