: Problem with Goodyear pro grades
MolonLabe 07-12-2010, 08:06 PM Three weeks ago I bought new Goodyear Wrangler pro grade silent armors from discount tire. The size is 265/75R16
My truck is a 2001 2500HD 4x4 extra cab and is stock with the factory 16" forged aluminum wheels.
Before these I had Michelins and had zero issues for the life of the tires. I would have replaced them with more Michelins but I needed better off road performance.
I had them on for a week before I went out on the highway. I had a pretty good vibration from 70 to 80 mph and the truck felt like it was wandering like the sidewalls were weak. I went back to discount and they re-balanced them and said they were off quite a bit. They still didn't feel right so I road forced them at work and found two were very bad (98 and 88) the other two were (35 and 30) This was the friday before I had to leave on a trip so I left work early and went to discount. They replaced the two bad tires and rebalanced.
It was closing time when I picked it up and when I got home I noticed one of the new tires had a lot of weight on it, around ten inches or so in three different weights. I was pissed because that was what was on one of the tires they replaced. It was a different wheel though and the wheels checked out good.
I left Saturday on the trip and as soon as I got up to speed I noticed the same vibrations and the same wandering feeling as before. The wandering feels like a semi just blew past you and made you swerve. It feels very unstable.
My question is, has anyone had these issues with their Goodyears and if so, what did you do ?

Are you running the stock PYO 16" forged aluminum wheels ?

hosehog113 07-13-2010, 01:18 PM I had a set of duratracs 265/75/16/LRE and loved everything about them except for the "wondering feeling". Everyone told me that it would go away after a few hundred miles. I never noticed any vibrations. I sold the tires after about 3,000 miles. I will not buy another set of goodyear tires because of this.
BoiseRob 07-13-2010, 02:24 PM That's why I picked Hankook Dynpro ATMs (RF10)...

What did you replace them with ?

How do you like them ?
What size and wheels ?

ottomatic 07-13-2010, 06:31 PM The only problem I have had with the SA Pro Grade is the Goodyear Gemi dealers not having the proper weights for the stock rims . Therefore I occasionaly throw weights. However since I get free rotation & balance by buying @ Goodyear I rotate and balance every 4,000 mi. I run 65 psi in front and 70 in rear & get over 50,000 mi per set

I also noticed the weights not fitting well. Looked like they were not seated all the way. This was at discount tire, where can you get the proper weights ??

If they are not seated all the way you will eventually throw them. Especially if you drive over 80mph as I do. Proper ones are hard to come buy. I have bought so many tires @ Goodyear and thrown weights the tech and I balance them together. We try to find the ones that fit the best. I have had the best luck with a "low" profile weight.
Also part of the problem is the "rim protector' which is built into the tire (SA Pro Grade) which does not allow certain weights to seat properly
I have had so many thrown I have been thinking of DYNA beads.

6APPEAL 07-14-2010, 09:07 AM I have th same tire, just a different size and on Bolder H2's. I've never had any issues.

JMJNet 07-14-2010, 10:40 AM Will it be a human factors? like the person doing the balance is not experienced, too new, etc.
If there is another Discount Tire there in the area, try them.
ottomatic 07-14-2010, 12:42 PM I just returned from the Goodyear Dealer. They broke down the tires and put 6 oz of this product(http://counteractbalancing.com/ ) in @ NO CHARGE. (It's good to build a long term relationship with a local company
They aren't Dyna beads but @ the price I couldn't refuse.
I will give them a few days and give my evaluation. (tires and rims look great with NO weights)
MolonLabe 07-14-2010, 07:11 PM Well, today I took it to another discount that had a road force machine and they said they were able to adjust three into spec but will have to replace one more (third tire replaced so far in three weeks time)
I will try them again but I doubt this will fix the floating/wandering I'm getting as well. I hope it at least fixes the vibration issue.
If this doesn't fix it I think I will make them trade me out for some new Hankooks.
hosehog113 07-19-2010, 11:04 PM I replaced the Duratracs with Toyo Open Country AT's. So far I love them, but am a little concerned about winter driving and plowing snow with them.
Gregs Manly GMC 07-21-2010, 11:05 PM Have 265 70 17 Silent Armors on my H2 rims. They had to spin one tire on rim to get good balance without lots of weight. But 22,000 miles and are doing great. Tire guy doing balance can do wonders.
MolonLabe 07-23-2010, 11:08 AM Ok, yesterday Discount warrantied out my goodyears for the Hankook Dynapros.
I will take a short trip tomorrow and really be able to tell but the floating/wandering that was present all the time with the goodyears is gone.
The Hankooks took little or no weight to balance and they ride great.
Thanks again to Discount tire !!
Brad92 07-23-2010, 04:15 PM You will like the Hankooks.
TheJDMan 07-26-2010, 03:17 PM I have a set of the GoodYear SA Pro in 265/75-16E on a wider 8" wheel. Installed them with Dyan Beads new and now have 40,000 miles and they run as smooth as glass at any speed. Probably another 10,000 in them. Dyan Beads work, no big secret just simple physics. No worries about thrown weights or scratched wheels.

ottomatic 07-26-2010, 06:06 PM After a week of http://counteractbalancing.com/ beads I had to go back up to Goodyear this morning. The tech broke the tires down and I sucked the beads out with my shop vac. We went back to regular weights.
From the onset 6oz of beads were put in per tire according to Counteract recommendations, After 2 days of the worst ride I contacted Counteract, A tech named Matt told me to give them a couple of more days as maybe the bags didn't release all the beads. He then stated that if there was no change, to break down tires remove beads and re-balance with regular weights. If a tire had more than 6oz of weights such as 8 oz I needed to add another 2 oz of beads, when I broke down tire again to re-insert beads.
F all that I left the regular weights on.
I asked Matt (Counteract tech) to E-mail me so I could send him this thread. He didn't.
BTW;
I wanted the Dyna Beads originaly but the Goodyear place only had Counteract.
Sometimes "free" isn't the best choice.
THANKS for the review of DYNA BEADS
Schlick55 07-26-2010, 10:12 PM www.magnumbalance.com I have used these on 315/75-16, 305/50-20, 285/76-16 all with no problems what so ever. Follow the chart, but the beads in, insert the stems, and air them up. I am done with tape weight uglyinginging(????) up $300 custom wheels, clamp weights destroying clear coat on my factory wheels, and tire shops telling me what I can and can't do.
BobJones 08-05-2010, 05:30 AM Put me on the list of those not happy with Goodyear Wrangler Silent armor pro-grade. Tires wander and shake at speeds above 50 mph. I have had them balanced so many times I lost count. After replacing several suspension components, aligned twice, and having the driveshaft straitened and balanced I know this is a tire issue. I placed the truck on jack stands and placed in gear. It is obvious that the tires are not round. There are high spots. I swapped rims per the tire guys recommendation and this did nothing.
These Goodyear’s have outstanding traction and are as tough as nails; I just got a bad set. Goodyear is a great company and the wife’s car has Goodyear triple tread with 60K and no problems. Sometimes tires sneak past quality control and this is one of those sets. Tires are more of a square than a circle, lol.
After 14,000 miles I will be attempting to get some type of refund or exchange. I will let you guys know how it goes. I will be testing out Goodyear’s warranty and customer service.
TheJDMan 08-05-2010, 09:41 AM Basically any balancing bead should work as they all work on the same physics to balance the tire. However, if the tire is too out of balance the beads may not be able to compensate or you may need more total bead weight. I use 10oz of beads in each tire and have no complaints at all about balance after 40,000 miles. And I have no scratches on the wheels from the weights. They do take a little getting used to because you will feel them get knocked out of balance when you hit a bump but they quickly rebalance as you drive. The other thing is that it is very important that the tires are not wet inside from the mounting lube. That will cause the beads to clump up inside the tire. I don't use the bags, I install my beads through the valve stem.
BobJones 08-05-2010, 05:32 PM Today I dropped my Goodyear Silent Armors off at Discount Tire. I have some original 245 wheels and tires on the truck for now as the 285 Silent armors vibrate too much too drive. So I dropped off the tires and wheels. Discount checked them out and this is what they said.
1. Heavily out of balance 1.25 to 5.25 oz.
2. Worst radial run out was .040".
3. 285 on 6.5" wheel should be 8". ( I said 7-9” rim was specked and he told me it had to be 8” although he admitted they install 285 on narrow rims all the time)
4. No separations.
5. No excessive run-out.
They also showed me some mumbo jumbo their computer screen from Goodyear. It says that no disturbance claim will be issued for any tire other than those with 2/32" or less tread wear and only on 2 tires.
The warranty on the Goodyear website and the warranty I was provided at purchase makes no mention of 2/32 or 2 tires. They simply say to go to an authorized dealer and fill out a claim form.
Discount was not willing to file the claim form. Discount tried to blame the narrow wheel and the previous balance shop. I am willing to accept that the previous balance shop could be wrong. The narrow wheel is not the problem. I have had 3 other sets of tires on these rims and they never ever had a balance problem or a vibration problem. The narrow rim requires lower pressure and can cause excessive center wear. Narrow rims also cause some "wandering" They never cause a vibration.
The only good news so far was that Discount tire did not charge me any money for the rebalance although I would have paid and sent a bill to the other tire shop that I just had rotate and balance 3 weeks ago.
I am going to install the tires now and go drive around. I will let you guys know.
BobJones 08-05-2010, 05:34 PM BTW these tires have 14,000 miles and have been balanced 5 times.
BobJones 08-05-2010, 07:19 PM Well after a short test drive on a familiar highway, the truck rides much smoother. Discount did good job balancing and I lowered the front pressure to 50 and the rear to 45. The center tread was wearing a bit more than the outers so the lower pressure should help. If I load the truck I will increase the rear pressure and probably the front. I drew an outline around the weights and wrote down how much was where in an attempt to monitor if any weight gets thrown. The rim protector on the Silent armor does keep the weighs from being pounded all the way down.
I will update in few weeks.
