I mentioned in my other thread that I want to put a 6.2 in an old cabin cruiser boat. I've noticed there are a whole bunch of ex-military HummVee 6.2 engines for sale on Ebay.

The ads state that some parts are different than the civilian 6.2's (like different voltage switches on the injection pump), and that scares me a bit. I don't want an engine with all kinds of weird-ass parts that I can't get easily.

Does anybody have any experience with one of these military-spec engines?

im no guru but from what ive read over the time im on here is that the only difference is voltage. military has 24volt starters and i think i seen somewhere about 24volt glow plugs. dunno about the IP but those engines should still be useable.

Yes, if the engine came out of a HMMWV everything is 24V..... (glowplugs, IP) But it's easy enough to swap them for there 12V counterparts...... If the IP has round rubber connectors on it it's 24V.... If it has the spade connectors on it it's just 12V.....

Im also not sure about the IP and injectors on the military 6.2/6.5 motors. They are made to run JP8 and not diesel fuel. JP8 is a jet fuel and has little to no lubrication ability. Down range we mix dextron with JP8 to help keep them from melting down on us but failure of IP pump is still very common

Actually...... no there NOT made to run JP8....... That's why they commonly fail when run on JP8.....

There made to run on diesel....... nothing else...... and by adding the dextron your just making them wear out even faster....... DO NOT run transmission fluid in the fuel...... adding a little bit of oil, such as 2-stroke oil is ok...... but the transmission fluid is designed to CREATE friction........ hence you're ruining the IP's by running it in your fuel, faster than just running the straight JP8........

Hmm thats kind of crazy. I cant tell you how long i have been told to do that for but i wished i had known that before. We used to drop one about once a week and when our CW3 started having us add Dextron we did notice a slow down on injection pump wear down. Of course we where lucky to get maybe 3000 miles out of the pumps on our 1151s :(

I've got one in my '67 C-30, although I didn't buy it on ebay. It was a military takeout. I swapped over the IP solenois, changed the valve covers to 6.5TD (for the CDR valve), added 6.5TD injectors and 12V starter, and 6.5TD equipment. Good to go!;)

I did buy some parts from Ted's Trucks N Stuff that sells them on ebay, and their service was great.
