: Towed my car, need to get home!
969c1 07-10-2010, 12:05 AM Just a quick updated. I bought my 2004 LB7 3500, 6.6 Duramax in November. It came with a Edged Juiced with Attitude and air intake. It has higher milage on it, but has been well maitained.
I hauled my car from Niagara Falls, Ont. on a float to Virginia. My car is a 96 Caprice.
On the drive here, I drove it with the tow/haul mode on.
The outside temp was around 95*. When going up inclines, my edge EGT temps were getting around 1000*. My engine temp got up to around 210* and then my Edge started beeping and warn me of engine temp.
It didn't seem like much for the temps to rise.
I never had the engine load go over 68%.
I also notice that the motor really has a higher pitch knock to it that you will hear more when you start to load up the motor. My mechanic told me that it was an injector that was loading up more than the others. It has always done this since I bought it. It does get louder when I set the Low Boost Fuel Pressure to a higher setting,( more smoke). I have it set to the lowest setting. ( less smoke).
I keep the oils clean and just put some new castrol Hypuron 15W-40 in it before I left.
Any input or suggestions on anything I should be doing? I have to load my wife and kids up soon to drive back home. It is a 12-14 hour drive and I don't want to get us stranded.
Any input would be appreciated.
Regards,
Matt.
sfcjones 07-10-2010, 06:30 AM MAybe you ought to lose the edge and see what happens. You might be surprised that the motor performs pretty well wihtout it. I would never do the more smoke setting....that would mean alot of unburned fuel...
bricklef 07-10-2010, 07:49 AM x2. If you're concerned about the motor, unhook the edge.
969c1 07-10-2010, 09:18 AM I will not be able to see the EGT or exact engine temp without the EDGE. Should I be concerned about it?
To get back to Canada, I have to go through Pennsylvania and alot of uphill and downhill highways.

Don't unhook it but return it to stock tuning. You can still use the gauges.
Arctic_CatF6 07-10-2010, 10:42 AM When i had my edge i had nothing but problems. I actually despised it, it shut my truck down at highway speeds, even AFTER the reflash. Ran SUPER high egts while towing. Ive been running my predator now on the 65HP tune for 2 years now and i couldnt be happier, never a single issue, transmission is still shifting as if it were new. I would look into a predator if your still wanting to run a tuner.
banshee1973 07-10-2010, 10:51 AM I have seen the Edge cause fuel knock that's why I don't have it anymore.
got-h2o 07-10-2010, 10:59 AM I couldn't stand my edge either. As for the temps, they're fine. You're warnings are adjustable and probably set way too conservatively. Pulling roughly 8k in 95* weather assuming you're running the a/c, 210 is no surprise, and where it's designed to run. 1,000 egt's is actually quite cool for towing. 1,400-1,500 is usually when the warnings should be set for; even then its not terribly dangerous, just a warning to not let it get worse.

AMEN.....same exact thing happened to me.i also switched to predator, only i run at 120 hp....now over 2 years i guess.i back it down when towing witch is not offen.
969c1 07-10-2010, 11:38 AM Thanks guys. I will look into either setting it at stock or just unplug it altogether.
Thanks again.

Matt.
06blackmax 07-10-2010, 12:18 PM I would get rid of the edge too. Get a set of gauges and a different tunner and you will be a lot happier. I run a PPE on lvl 2 most of the time which is 90 hp. Have lots of power and good economy. I go to lvl 3 some just to play but mostly stay on lvl2. The trans gauge in your truck is pretty accurate so just get a boost and pyro gauge and youll be good to go.
kbbingham 07-10-2010, 12:40 PM I also got rid of my edge for a quadzilla set at 90hp and gauges. One of the best things i've done.
969c1 07-10-2010, 12:43 PM This injector preloading and making a clatter sound, has happened before?
969c1 07-11-2010, 08:38 AM I set the power level to the stock mode on the EDGE. I noticed right off the bat, that once up to operating temp, the motor seems more quieter, not as much of that clap sound.
I will start my journey home to Canada tomorrow. I am just dreading that Washington D.C. traffic when we leave Hopewell, Virginia.
Thanks again to everyone for the time and input.
Regards,
Matt Botbyl.
jon c 07-11-2010, 08:53 AM let us know how the drive went. good luck to ya. hopefully the edge was the only problem.
Grit dog 07-12-2010, 11:17 AM Am I the only one that doesn't think 1000deg egt and 210 engine temp is bad?
Sounds about right to me. Did you hear the fan kick in when you got to 210?
My 02, I set the engine temp warning up to 215 on the Edge. My truck would always go to 210, fan kicked in, down to high 190s, repeat as needed.
1000deg EGT, asssuming it's pre turbo is nothing. My trucks hit that and more running empty up mtn passes every day.
My 02 had the same ticking at higher rpms too, never appeared to be a problem.
I'd say you're fine, get in and go.

You and goth2o.
How did I miss that? :smashfrea Hell, I hit 1100*-1200* just passing someone with a little spirited pressure on the skinny pedal.
jrmsoccer32 07-12-2010, 12:43 PM Hell 1000 is nothing at all if i crank it down to WOT I can hit 1400 in the blink of an eye. I try to keep mine below 1200 which I consider safe.
1LTREATR 07-12-2010, 06:59 PM that caprice could probably tow a 1 ton........
Arctic_CatF6 07-14-2010, 02:33 PM while towing, and even sometimes while its hot during the summer ill run 1000* just going down the highway at 110km/h but generally i sit between 750-800* depending on demand for boost. In my opinion anything over 1350 for an extended peroid of time is going to do damage. Im a high pressure welder and i know the melting temperatures of various alloys of steels/aluminium etc, so just a word of caution is all.
