I've heard a lot of people say 'buy forged wheels, they are stronger' and 'cast wheels may fracture', etc., etc.....

If any of you know of real instances where cast wheels have suffered catastrophic failure, not anecdotes, I'd like to hear them. These should be instances where people were towing within the limits of their truck specs.

I know that, technically speaking, forged wheels are supposed to be stronger than cast but is the difference really worth the extra money for most of us? If you are towing within the limits of your truck and the rating of a cast wheel exceeds the rating of the rear and the tires what's the point of spending the extra cash for the forged wheels?

If the cast wheels are rated for the weight you need to carry then there's no reason to get forged if you don't want to spend the money. The nice thing about forged wheels is that they can be made lighter for the same strength and less rotational weight theoretically will = better fuel mileage. Also cast vs. forged if you get a polished finish and not chrome the forged wheel will be easier to keep polished because there are less natural pits in the metal due to the denser grain structure of the alloy.

Less weight also means less unsprung weight, which is better.

And less unsprung weight means less wear and tear on many of the attached components such as brakes etc.

forged wheels are also very true, cast is not as precise and inform. tire guys at the shop I had my tires put on at were amazed at how little weight they needed for my weld renegades, versus the H2 spare
