I now have a 2001 2500HD 6.6 Diesel with 57,000. Have not had any trouble out of it but the injector issues have got me a little shakey. With the new employee discount going on, I am thinking of trading in this one and buy the 2005. But now I am reading about overheat problems and I don't want to trade one issue for another one. So I suppose what I am asking is, you'll with the 2005 duramax, what do you think about them and is it worth trading for the new one. Thanks for any input.

do you plan on doing upgrades? I can tell you now that the LB7,which you have, is so much more easier to upgrade. You don't have any of the EGR and emissions equipment we all have to worry about with the LLY.

with your miles..yours is just breaking in. It will ultimately be your decision, but if I were in your shoes I'd keep the LB7 and do chip, exhaust, intake...

Correction...Diesels are exempt from emissions testing.

if you don't plan on doing that stuff then by all means go for the newer one, you'll like it.

just my $.02
good luck

Personally, its too close to the 06 models coming to get the 05. The discount will be eaten by the year model depreciation. Get the 06 when it hits the floor and take advantage of the longer period of usage versus depreciation.

Also the 06 is supposed to have improved cooling, hopefully that will eliminate the problem and your concerns. Also the extra cog in the allison will help economy even more.

I am waiting for the next major redesign, maybe 07, but then again I have a newer truck now and you are wanting a new one NOW, so its a different situation.

So my vote would be place the order now for an 06 exactly the color and options you want.

Enjoy!

Wait for the 2006.

With your current low mileage LB7, I would wait for a 2006 or even the 2007.
You never know, they may some good discounts/rebates on those too.

:exactly:

There will always be good deals. If not more rebate, then lower or zero financing.

I would wait for the 2010's or the 2012's I hear tell they will have ....

Just get the truck and enjoy it TODAY. Always remeber this - tomorrow is guaranteed to no one. Everyone is always "waiting" for the next great computer, the next great camera, the next great etc. etc.. The next one will always be better, so whattaya going to do wait forever - JUST DO IT!!!!!
If it's a bad one trade it, if the 06's are sooo much better trade it, these vehicles hold their value, and people are screaming for good used ones, if it serves your purpose keep it, if not dump it.
I had an 04 SRW and wated a dually so I traded for an 05 dually.
I went up a year and got a dually for 3K more - and my GM points on my card covered that.
Now if I waited for the 05's in 04 - I would have lost a GREAT year of using the 04 and the memories I had with it because I was "waiting"

Later its called regret when two months roll by and you see the newer ones with the better transmission, superior cooling, and more power out of the box. I am like you, I won't wait forever but dang we are too close to 06's to get an 05.

Just my opinion, to each his own.

I found a used '05 and bought it. It had 2080 miles on it. I say get what makes you happy. We don't buy these trucks for an investment since they depreciate and I never buy a truck with the intent to sell. I plan to keep it a while.

You can drive yourself crazy with what will they come out with next. Sure the '06 or '07 may have more HP but who really uses the 300 hp we have to the full extent anyway.

I believe the "injector issues" are more exaggurated (sp?) on these forums. I believe the posts represent just a fraction of owners who either are not a member or don't write posts. (Now watch mine break town tomorrow. hehehe)

Thats my .02. take it for what it is worth.

I agree with Tx on waiting, tho I thought I read that the 6 speed Ally would be a mid-year '06 intro? My '05 runs hot and I'm not going to mod it in any way that GM can squirm out of a fix (once it looks like there's one available) -- it's frustrating getting a brand new truck that needs add-ons or fixes just to make it the way it should have come from the factory. There's a great group of guys here working on some solutions that hopefully will end up being a recall from GM or at least a "complain and we'll fix it" type TSB...

Heck, I've even decided to keep my '99 PSD as a backup just based on my early experience with the '05. Hopefully they fix the cooling in '06 and when the 6 speed Ally is available they'll have some nice discounts for ya'...

Good luck!

I agree. I just traded my '03 2500 hd for a '05 3500 SRW. With the current pricing deal - I had $10k off msrp on the new truck -> that takes care of the "driving off the lot depreciation". I got my '03 for gm employee discount as well - $9k off. I got wholesale high book for my '03 and the net is that I had $4k in depreciation over 2 years.

The '05s have better cooling than the '04s due to the reworked grill and hood. My guess is that there are other changes as well, but GM doesn't advertise it. The folks overheating the '05s now are pushing them very, very hard -> loaded to max and pushing up steep grades at nearly 80 mph. If you feel the need to push up a hill at full throttle and 70+ mph with a huge fifth wheel then wait for the '06, otherwise pull the trigger now and save yourself $10k.

BTW, I love my 2005. Things I notice between it and my '03 are...

- Stock ride is better, I had to replace my stock shocks immediately on my '03 (bilsteins), it was like a pogo stick. I don't know if the 3500 has larger shocks than my '03 - but the rebound dampening is markedly improved.

- Folks complained alot about the air conditioning on the '01-'03s with an updated accumulator available to "fix" the issue. I thought my '03 worked fine - but the '05 is much better, cools the cab right down. My truck is an LS with the optional climate control - it automatically goes into recirc mode to cool it down initially; It is "set it and forget it" now - Couldn't be better! :)

- I am going from an Xcab to a crew cab long box and getting used to the additional thought and wiggle necessary for parking it. I like the ride of the long wheelbase.

- I am not one for "glitz" and prefer "function" over "form". I am glad I went with the 3500 SRW; To me, it is built the way they should build the 2500hd. Strong steel rims that are 7" wide (versus 6.5" for the 2500) and 265 tires stock that are rated to carry more load (versus 245s for the 2500hd). I got into the 3500 so that I could be better prepared to haul a camper if I decide to get one later. It also has heavier leaf springs (and an overload spring) in the rear to provide 9900 GVW (versus 9200 pounds GVW for the 2500hd). The 3500 really doesn't cost any more than the 2500hd - so it was a "no brainer" for me...

- Motorwise, the LLY accelerates more smoothly than my lb7. It feels more zippy than the peak numbers would indicate. It runs quieter going down the road. I really, really like it. :) Others have complained about decreased fuel mileage on the LLY - first tank I got 14 around town - which is in line with my lb7; I think reported mileage is all over the map (just like it was for the lb7). I think the biggest factor here is the weight of one's right foot.

It seems to me that the more smog they add the more HP they will need to add just to stay with the current models. Cal-trans is currently running exhaust systems on some of their bigger diesels that cost about 15K and opacity test at 0. We also find they eat some HP and use Diesel injected into the muffler to burn the particulates which means less economy. Coming all too soon to a state near you.

Just my thoughts, I just got a 2005 2500HD crew, 4x4 diesel. I traded in my 04 HD crew (2wd, gas) There are very few of the diesels left, I was lucky to get one. I got a loaded LS for $35,600. The sticker was $48,000.
(buckets w console, bose, disc changer, wired for everything, etc)
I don't think the 06's will be anywhere near these prices. I know when I bought my 2004 they weren't knocking $12,000+ off the sticker.
There are very few diesels left in the western states. Like I said, I got lucky with mine. I got it before it came in on a dealer trade, while I was there 3 people called in looking for diesels... none left. I called over 15 dealers in WA state and got lucky, they had just got a call from a dealer in Oregon that needed one of their trucks, they made them give a diesel for it! They didn't even have all the specs on the truck yet, turned out it was exactly the truck I wanted. (color and equipment)
Anyway... this is my first 4x4 and my first diesel. (lived in So Cal, now in WA) I am excited to get it! (monday)

I really appreciate all the input on this and all have good points. It is just hard not to take advantage of a $10,000 discount. I have contacted two dealers on the 2005 and I suppose it will all come down to what they will give me for my 2001 model. I am not going to give it to them, they will have to give me a fair price for it or I will just keep it. Thanks again for your opinions.

Keep the 01 mod the piss out of it and use the 05 as your daily driver.
