: OK, where does my new Prodigy Trailer Brake plug in to??

Hi, I got the new Prodigy trailer brake controller and the optional GM harness. But there is nothing in the directions that shows where it plugs in under the dash.

I haven't looked yet, just thought I'd ask here to be sure where to look and where it goes. And like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Where have you guys found to be the best place to mount it so it's not knocking me in the knees but is easily accessible? Thanks.

There is a terminal box down by the drivers left foot. Pull the cover off and there is a connection diagram on the inside. The receptacle you want is in the top row, second from the left IIRC.

Ditto what MJB said... ALso, don't forget to add a fuse at STUD 1 under the hood... This will supply constant 12V for charging your trailer brake battery and operational 12V interior lights.

Cheers.

It's just an open car hauler trailer, not enclosed. So do I need to put the fuse in?

That depends on how your breakaway box battery is charged.... Hook it up without the under hood fuse and verify your breakaway battery is charging... If not, add the fuse.

You should note that trailer brakes will work without the fuse. (at least mine did)

Enjoy.

Wow! That was incredibly easy. Plug it in here and plug it in there. I made a bracket for hooking it up under the dash using the little bolt on the left side of the hump. I feel stupid for asking about this.

Well, since I feel stupid, how do I tell if my breakaway battery is charging?

Hook everything up and with the truck running you can put a Volt Meter on your breakaway battery. You should have 13-14 volts with truck running. If you only have 12 or below, it not charging.

Gotcha ya. I'll do that when I hook it all up this weekend. Thanks.

Most trailer companies hook the charger for the breakaway battery to the tow vehicle running light circuit. (I know pace does for a fact). This is what is also shown on several of the major breakaway battery kits. That way the breakaway battery gets charged whenever your parking or headlights are on. The charger draws only a few hundred milliamps. (0.100 amps) so the draw is very low, much less than even one taillight.

On mine I added a heavy duty relay in series with the 40A trailer power connector. It is engaged only when the truck ignition is in run. The way the factory wiring is set up, the 40A 12 V is always hot, so if you have it going to the trailer battery you could end up running down your trailer battery, and truck battery if you forget to unhook the trailer plug. NOT good.

I don't believe so. My instructions specifically say no fuse for our diesels. I looked in the fuse box, and there is a blank space where the fuse would go.

If you do not want Power at the receptacle then don't put in the Fuse.

I plan to do this as well, I find the factory configuration a pretty bad design - other vehicles I've had even included extra terminals on the ignition-on solenoid to help wire.

Anyway, more info on how you wired yours would be useful - where did you tap in to the power wire as well as the ignition-on wiring? Thanks!

Scotte,

If you go Prodigy, they sell an optional vehicle specific wire harness for our trucks. Just plug this into the fuse block (under the dash, drivers side, above your left foot) and then to the back of the controller. I HIGHLY reccommend the optional harness.

Add the fuse under the hood (at STUD 1) and you will have power to the trailer connector.

This took me literally, 30 minutes the first time I did it on my 00 Z71. When I bought my current truck, it took 10 minutes.

Cheers.

I actually have run my battery out in the truck with my trailer lights in the past. Now I unplug the trailer from the truck each night in order to prevent running the battery dead. It sucks to wake up in the morning (usually in the winter) and realize you cannot even start the truck or the lp genset due to low power... Now I have 4 6volt trojan batteries in the trailer and this doesnt happen much.

Right, I put that fuse in when I bought the truck 2 years ago, but it's always on @ the trailer plug. What I was curious was how ktmrfs wired his so it would only be powered when the ignition switch is on - much more sensible, in my opinion.

so I have the Prodigy installed, now what size fuse do I install at stud one for power to charge the breadaway?
