Want to get everyone's opinion on reusable oil, fuel, and tranny filters from here http://www.gopurepower.com/store/item.asp?cmd=dsplyItem&itemKey=694

They are a bit pricey but I figure if you started using these on a new truck they may pay for themselves over the life of the truck.

I dont really think they would pay for themselves. Also I would wonder how clean you can actually get them and exactly how well they filter. Anyway, lets look at the cost. That oil filter you link to is 240 bucks. Lets say the mobil 1 filter that I personally use is 12 bucks. IIRC it was closer to 10 last time I bought it but it may have been on sale. That means that reusable one costs the same as 20 mobil 1 filters.

Now, I change my oil ~7500 miles. That means those 20 mobil1 filters are going to last 150,000 miles. Thats 10 years worth of driving for me. Lets also think that if something were to happen to the element in it, lets say you break it while cleaning or lose one of the magnets it says it has. What are the chances 10years from now (at which point you are just now breaking even) they will still make the parts to fit that particular one.

Im not killing on the product here by any means, I have no experience with it, I thought they were actually kind of neat when they first came out but then after running the calculator over it, it doesnt make sense (atleast not for me). If you drive 30-40,000 a year then it could make sense.

If you want to use a premium oil filtration system, the look at PPE's centrifugal filter here: www.pacificp.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_7&products_id=202

These work, some of my old motorcycles had them built in, never had a problem. They use them in OTR trucks, RR locomotives and ships. Same principle is used in water treatment - only enormously larger. No filter at all, and they clean much smaller particles.

Also, clean oil filters (any filter really) doesn't filter as well as one that has been used awhile. Filters 'load' with particulates that reduce the spaces between the media, this makes them more efficient at removing smaller particles. A filter is most efficient at the point when we change them. We change them to prevent reduced flow, because as they become more efficient, those spaces fill up faster and could clog. You gain nothing by changing a filter too early. The PPE filter is centrifugal so it doesn't rely on media or loading, making it filter the same when clean.

I use the Amsoil Remote Dual Bypass filter setup, which cleans down to 2 microns. In that I change oil 25,000 to 35,000 miles, with a new full flow filter every oil change, and both a full flow and bypass filter every second oil change, cost of the premium filters isn't a factor. The PPE filter would be even better, but it wasn't available when I did my install.

Wonder if the soap and water to clean it can contaminate the oil? How would you dry it after cleaning?

Great idea!!!

ive got all three and havent had a problem yet to date...have had them 2.5 yrs just make sure to oil the o-ring before you put it back together...to clean them u can use soap and water or carb cleaner MAKE SURE to rince with water really good and then use compressed air to dry..pretty simple to use hope this helps!!!!

Most would be hard pressed to really save any money with them.

240$ for the oil, 200$ for the tranny, 300$ for the fuel verses what I pay. 10 for the oil, 6$ for the tranny and 8$ for the fuel filter(no stock filter on my truck).

Most people dont keep there truck 10 or 12 years to recoup what they cost. Thats assuming they last that long. I must admit the craftsmanship on those look incredible and its a good way to know the condition of your filter element at any time.

I sell the Baldwin Oil filter for 9.75 so you could buy 24 Baldwin oil filters for the price of 1 reusable then you have to clean it. So the reusable wouldn't even start to give you a return on investment until 180k miles based on a 7500 mile oil change. I do 15k mile oil changes so it wouldn't start paying until 360k miles.

It claims 1-2 microns but I would have to question that, anything that filters that low it seems won't pass enough oil to satisfy the needs of the engine which is why bypass filtration only takes about 10% of the oil on each pass. The rest goes through a full flow filter to keep the needs of the engine lubricated. I am sure dnewton would know more about the technical statistics of the oil flow and the needs of the Dmax engine to not incure oil starvation.

I would rather throw out my dirty oil filters than make more work by having to clean it. Just my .02 cents.
