: How to repair door hinge mechanism?

Hi guys,

My '95 Tahoe has a piece missing from the driver's side door. It is the part of the hinge mechanism that helps to hold the door open. It is the spring-loaded assembly that helps to hold the door either totally open or half-way open. It appears that the 'roller' on the bottom of the upper door hinge pin has come apart, and the spring and the roller have come off. Does anyone know how to repair this?

By the way, the dealer does have the parts (about $30 bucks for the roller, and about $12 for the spring), but I'm unsure as to how to go about the repair.

Sincerely,

Rob :)

TT,

You'll need a door spring compressor like this one to install the spring: http://www.rodneydickman.com/n106.html

IIRC, to install the roller setup, you may have to separate the hinge. If so, it would be just like if your had to rebuild it. Go buy a couple new hinge pivot pins (like $2 at the autopartsstore...on of those HELP products). Use the same procedures you would if replacing the hinge pins, esp holding the door up using a padded jack, or padded blocks.

If the roller is on a separate pivot, you may be able to install it without separating the hinge.
