Did GM stay with their ingenious design of making it impossible to change the fuel filter without removing the fender liner or did they change it on the LML?

Look around on the site and you can see pictures of it. Doesn't look so different from the old one but I can do the old one in 15 minutes top w/o moving the fender well or disconnecting anything other then WIF lead.

I've never removed anything other than the filter on my 2004.5 LLY.Are the LBZ and LMM different than the LLY?

You my friend, have a LBZ. Different story. I was able to change the filters on my past two trucks without digging in the fenderwell. The LMM is more conjested to the point it's impossible to pull it from the top.

Well, that's all good and easy UNTIL the fender is full of snow and ice from driving 600 miles in -20 degree weather and you wax the filter!!!!!

Yes. See above comment.

I had an LBZ and NEVER removed the fender. I did the change from the top of the engine compartment every time.

Good idea but I travel long distances in the winter with my truck and I think there is an advantage to having the filter being warmed by the engine heat.

I'm about to delete the factory filter because it has stranded me too many times. Let's see...

Number of times truck has died/broken down on me: 5
Number of times because of the fuel filter assembly: 4

So I'm with jdugie123, delete the factory filter and solve (several) problems. You can always put an in-line fuel heater if you're worried.

the lml looks like it hard from the top. looks like if you remove the air filter assembly you will have more room.

I'm not sure it is possible to service the filter from the top on the LML. Honestly don't think you can even drain it from the top but I'm sure there are some out there with exceptional contorsional skills who can get it done, expect that they also need younger skin than mine or they will suffer lots of blood loss. The LBZ was relatively easy if you did a little tweeking of the offending lines above the filter and had the intake tube removed. As for the LML you have a lot less room and the removal of the liner is a far more reasonable approach unless you are just trying to make the point that it can be done from above. Next time I change it I need to get some pointers from the poster who can remove the liner in three minutes, congrats, you must be amazing.

Buy the filter access cover kit from "dirtbikindad" and be done with it. Since '07.5, the AC lines have been the reason the filter can't be accessed from the top. I just bought 3, as removing a frozen liner along with a frozen mudflap has finally got me frustrated enough to spend some coin. The LML has the filter in the same place, but the fender liner has different contour and "dirtbikindad" has that one, too

You guys should try changing mine out, then you will be happy to change out your LMM's or LML's.

I agree, the factory filter is junk, and it is the same thing for LML. I have gone through 3 stock filters in the last 6 months, and that is using fuel from the same places I did with my two previous trucks. Everytime I get about 50-60% on the DIC and notice my rail pressure is dropping off, so I crack the bleeder and there is no pressure. Install new filter and instant pressure.

So I just bought the remote 2 micron filter kit as well. I figure it will pay for itself shortly since the 2 micron filters are only like 15 bucks, plus I have never had fuel gel up on me in the past 10 years so I not concerned about the heater, but I always run additive every tank.

I just put the nicktane on my lml. I don't remember unhooking the heater element?

The only issue I had with putting it on the lml is that I had to cut this metal brace just a little to get the filter to screw on straight.

Otherwise, I thought it was fine.

Yes, I still have to remove liner. Fortunately I have a heated garage and a heated shop so I don't really have to worry about snow and Ice.

LML is worse than LMM for fuel filter top access....
