For sometime I've been noticing a noise in my sterring wheel, especially when backing a trailer. I'm starting to here it a whole lot more (several times a day, compared to maybe once a week before). Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem.
Thanks
Billy

You have the steering rattle...........it is a known problem.......
look in the ASK the Tech's or the TSB forums for it.........
I have mine done at 8k miles and has been good.

I had the rattle and the steering shaft has been replaced. The rattle is gone for now.
what I'm hearing and feeling is hard to explain. It' more like a rubbing sound and when it does it you can also feel it. It's starting to bug me a little.
Thanks for the reply GMC-2002-DMAX

Sounds like it might be the plastic fairing below the steering wheel, mine warped & rubbed, had to pull the steering wheel to replace.

I just bought a 02 and have noticed a similar problem. But it is only noticable when you crank the wheel fast in one direction or the other.

Bsiler, I had the same problem with mine. It drove me crazy. At first I thought it was inside the steering column because it felt like and sounded like it was coming from there. Took it in and they ran the VIN and come to find out they had replaced the steering shaft twice for the previous owner. End up replacing the steering gear and I have had no problems since.

Thanks, At least now I know I'm not going crazy ( I guess that remains to be seen ).
DuraMax16, Was there a TSB or did they just figure it was the steering gear.

Same noise here. Also have the mysterious turn signal stick that clicks when the wheel is turned (imagine the aliens from "Signs").

Mine makes a rubbing sound when I turn the wheel hard left. I guess that is the same sound you all are talking about. I need take mine in also.. starting to get annoying.

No there is no TSB on it but the front end mechanic that I use was able to narrow it down to that. It obviously was covered under warranty. Hope that helps.

There is a known problem with the steering shaft. They won't do anything unless you bring it in . If they don't have the part (it's a30 minute fix if in stock) the tech will grease it and that makes the noise stop unitl it is replaced.
