On the D-max when it gets plugged in at night, if the engine is warm at all it will make a very high rate clicking noise. It only does it when it is plugged in and the engine is warm, if it is cold then it doesn't do it. What could it be and is it detrimental to anything?

Go to this post http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=155&PN=1. There is a TSB that addresses this issue. It isn't anything to worry about.
Is the engine running when you hear the noise or is it shut off? If it's shut off the noise is just the block heater warming up- they can make all kinds of strange noises when first plugged in and engine coolant temps will vary the sounds.Doesn't hurt anything. If it's running when you hear the noise see Wisemans link.
No the engine is off when it happens. Thanks for the replies guys, I think I got my answer.
