: Time for a lift
mannytranny 07-13-2005, 11:35 PM Well, my hitch and bike rack plan went pretty good....but now I think that I am in need of increased clearance.
Many a TDI owner has added a lift kit onto their car. Some as much as 2 inches.
Does anyone know the exact diameter of the springs on a Jetta TDI?
Im looking at spacers right now......I think 1 inch would be good.
Just another step in truckifying my TDI..........
blnagel 07-14-2005, 10:25 AM Keep us posted and post pics iffin you do lift it.
Ben
mannytranny 07-14-2005, 11:13 AM You know I will........:ro)
CottonWoodBlues 07-24-2005, 05:57 PM ...And then a gunrack in the back window. And don't forget the RanchHand! :joke: :badidea:
Seriously, there are very few TDi's around here, so I've never seen a lifted Jetta. Whatever the hell for??? Mudders? Yeah, I'm with Ben. I want to see a good photo when you get it done. I'm really curious now.

CottonWoodBlues 07-31-2005, 02:34 PM Awright, Manny, how's it coming on your Jetta lift? I'm really interested now. Having just returned from a week in the TDi, averaging 48mpg, I'd like to raise it a tad as well. First off, these Montana highways are riddled with pothole repairs, highway construction zones with huge transittions from new pavement to the old surface, irregular city street surfaces. You get the idea. In a car so close to the ground, every bump and blister is up close and personel. A second issue is the speedometer error. I'll have to see the VW dealer about it, but it's about 4 mph off, veified by my GPSr. Needless to say, my wife's earlier milage reports have been in error, on the other side of 50mpg or so. But if their repairs are anything like GM's on my DMax's speedo, well, a two inch lift should be enough room for a large enough diameter tire to get the speedo reading back in the zone. So anything you've got to share along these lines, I'm paying attention here, Manny. Hope to hear from you soon. Brock in Colstrip, Mt.
mannytranny 08-01-2005, 12:32 PM The car is kinda low. I would like to be able to clear road debris, and not be worried of scraping when/if I go to the dirt. With these cars, the low point seems to be the aluminum crankcase, so thats no good.
Ive also got a hitch on the car, and when the hitch has the bikerack on it, it scrapes pretty easy.
I also dont like to have to squat to get into the car.
It will be lifted in a week or so. There are a few other folks on the tdiclub who have done the same thing, and love it.
PM me for details, the guy who makes the spacers is doing a batch soon.
OCDUNE 08-01-2005, 02:37 PM Keep in mind a lift may lower your MPG. Airflow under the car will affect this. Might not be noticable though
OCDUNE
mannytranny 08-01-2005, 04:24 PM Ya, the guy said that I may lose 1 mpg.
The mileage varies 5 mpg just by the different ways I drive it, so thats not a biggie for me.
I hope it handles close to stock though.
CottonWoodBlues 08-02-2005, 09:10 PM Manny, Does your car have the plastic pan underneath the front suspension/ engine compartment? I'm sure that goes a long ways to cleaning up the under-car air flow. It's a real PITA to remove for the oil changes. At least they're at 10k intervals. If raising the car sacrifices a mile or two per gallon, oh well. I'll drop you a pm later tonight. I'm working nights this week. Brock.
mannytranny 08-03-2005, 07:50 PM Ya, Ive got the belly pan. Thats another reason for raising the car. That thing costs over 200 bucks at a dealer. Ide hate to scrape it off. 1.5 in lift may also allow me to do oil changes without having to run it up on blocks. I may also go to a taller tire somewhere down the road (bad pun) for another .5 in.
The lift only costs 90 bucks. It is really a steal. I am basically trying to set the TDI up so that I can take it on some of my longer trips (with one or two passengers). Taking the truck on a 1600 mile trip with mountain bikes in the back is a waste IMO.
With the bike rack on, the car is pretty liable to scrape the rack. Ide also like the ability to do dirt roads, as some of my bike trails are off of dirt roads.
It is just another layer of versatility added to the car.
mannytranny 08-04-2005, 09:27 PM 1.5 inches is on the way!!!
So cheap too.
SaguaroKid 08-13-2005, 08:49 PM Did ya get ur done yet? Need pics.....
mannytranny 08-13-2005, 08:53 PM It is in the mail.......!!!
ill be sure to take before and after pics.
mannytranny 08-17-2005, 11:13 PM Here she is.........
SaguaroKid 08-18-2005, 10:30 AM I want it see the car....after install.
mannytranny 08-19-2005, 01:30 AM Here are pics of the wheelwells.
1.5" works great. I wont have any trouble with my hitch rack scraping. It also is easier to get into and out of, and it looks better!!!
As for the install, I hope I never see another coil spring compressor as long as I live............
SaguaroKid 08-19-2005, 11:09 AM Crap, I wanted to see the whole car.....
mannytranny 08-19-2005, 01:24 PM Give me 3 more days!!!
mannytranny 08-23-2005, 08:37 PM Ooops, thats not it.
mannytranny 08-29-2005, 09:16 PM Here we go!
Shoulda done this day 1.
When its time for new tires, Ill go to a slightly taller tire. Will give me another 1/4".
SaguaroKid 08-29-2005, 09:18 PM Yeah baby yeah.........looks good.
mannytranny 08-30-2005, 12:29 AM Not too bad, huh?
If I can take that on a few trips over the truck, it will soon pay for itself.
all it lacks is an SFA, Ranch hand front and rear bumpers, and a set of clearance lights. ):h
CottonWoodBlues 08-31-2005, 01:08 PM See! It's not just me, Manny. LOL...
BB
mannytranny 09-01-2005, 08:57 PM Hmmm.....Ranch hands......Ive already been thinking about clearance lights.
