What is one of the less expensive chip upgrades to improve fuel milage?

07.5 crew cab. Averaging 10 mpg. Empty.

I've talked to many people with the same year truck, who are getting 15+ mpg empty.

Tuning won't get you more economy - but you may have many other issues...like clogged fuel/air filters, blocked EGR valve...very low tire pressure etc...

Install tuners to get more power, but mileage will suffer - especially when you put your foot in it!

Well I'm sure it's not the tire pressures, they are set at 50 front, and 70 rear.

As far as the fuel and air filters, they were just replaced, and there was no gain.
Not sure about the EGR valve........ I'll check into that.

Is there anything I can do? THis truck has sucked on gas since I got the damn thing 4 years ago

I just installed the Hypertech Max Energy - level 2 on my 2007.5 lmm duramax. My daily commute is around 20 miles round trip and averaged 14 mpg before the install. After (and adjusting for correct tire size) i am now getting 17.5. My opinion is that 1.5 mpg was the correction in speedo reading and the other 2 are from the tuner. I am taking it out of town next week to check the highway mileage and will be towing my toy hauler back so will also get a comparison of it loaded.

Many, many, many, many ppl get MPG increase out of their tuners....

If you are just looking to run electronics, I suggest going with Banks. Most others will just clog your DPF quicker sending the truck into regen mode more often which kills your mileage.

You should have that just the opposite. 70psi in the front where all the weight is and 50psi in the rear.

So no tuners offer mileage increases? Or just your Banks?

I think we need to take a few steps back and explain some things first. Yes, a good tuner will increase your mileage. Put simply...a tuner increases the power of the motor itself. Therefore, it is easier for the truck to move increasing the mileage. Depending on the tuner you can also change shift points, rpms, timing, fuel etc. which can be made to better your mileage. However, the newer trucks have the DPF system that is made to cut down emissions but also chokes the power, mileage, and overall performance of the truck. A tuner will increase the fuel and timing which creates soot (smoke out the exhaust system). This soot builds up in the DPF system which causes the system to regen more often than it normally would. A regen kills your mileage. So to sum it up...a tuner on a DPF equipped truck will not necessarily help your mileage. If you get rid of the DPF and get a free flowing and larger exhaust system and put a nice tune on it then you will see huge increases in mileage. The only problem is that deleting the DPF and tuning the new trucks will void your warranty.

On my LB7 (first generation-does not have any emissions shit) I am getting 22mpgs highway and about 16-18 city with the mods in my sig. The new trucks with a DPF are hardpressed to get 15. If you tune it and delete the DPF you can do 20ish.

Hope you understood.

I was being a smart ass to FBA. My EFI and 4in exhaust took me from 12mpg to 16(Mixed driving). I agree with your write up. Sucks for Banks and DPF's.

Haha alright. I read your sig after my post and that was somewhat confusing. Someone running a DPF delete and EFI doesn't know how this works? Haha.
