: Edge EZ?
WiggyHD 07-13-2005, 01:25 PM So, if I have my reading right, The Edge EZ would be the one for me? I will be doing some towing up to around 8000-10000 lbs, but not on a regular basis. Someday down the road I will have a fifth wheel with slide outs, but our current camper is a 27 foot bumper pull, that when loaded to max will be 8000 lbs. The reason I am asking this is the EZ has the economy tune and tow tune, which is all I think I will need for the next few years, and I wouldn't require the exhaust, intake and other expensive mods yet. However, I have read on this site about problems with the edge. Are they limited to the Edge W/Attitude? Would the Banks Six Gun be better for me for more power down the road? I thank you for your help as I am new and you all have the on road experiance that I can profit from.
THANKS!
Mark
briano 07-13-2005, 01:33 PM every tuner has its problems, its not limited to just Edge. In my opinion Edge has the very best in customer service. For any reason you can return for replacement, upgrades are free, etc, etc.. They have done well with this last FW upgrade.
sounds like the EZ is just what you are looking for.
for the record..you don't have to do all those upgrades just to get a tuner..it doesn't hurt any, but you don't need them. Those are mainly to lower EGT's for running the higher level power tuners. In your case you just need a little extra power so the EZ should be perfect.
McRat 07-13-2005, 01:46 PM The Edge EZ on an otherwise stock truck runs pretty good.
I went to Missouri and back using that tune to pick up a heavy machine on a flatbed, and it performed flawlessly. Granted the trailer was only about 7000lb, but it had surplus power on steep grades at high altitude even though it was set on 1. It never broke a sweat.
WiggyHD 07-13-2005, 02:00 PM Thanks for the quick replies! It helped out ALOT! The EZ seems to be reasonably priced also. I will check out our vendors sites and see where I can get it for the best price.

DSTRBD 07-13-2005, 02:21 PM We have had ZERO tech calls/problems with the EZ. Power is under rated and it runs very well.
Mark Craig 07-13-2005, 03:39 PM WiggyHD,
We have sold a lot of those sicne they came out and have had great reports from customers. I would still caution you about gauges and such if you're stepping up to that 27 foot w/slide outs, you really need them on a stock truck with that size trailer, much lesss with an EZ.
If you have any questions give us a call, we'll be glad to help you.

WiggyHD 07-13-2005, 03:40 PM So, basically I don't need to worry about EGT's before I have the money for a better exhaust......right? No worries about the trans slipping?
Mark
McRat 07-13-2005, 03:46 PM Don't run the highest power setting when towing, and run the lowest setting when towing heavy and you should be fine.
WiggyHD 07-13-2005, 04:11 PM I am pretty sure of my decision now. The end of next week we are moving from Idaho to Maryland. Whether or not I have my new stuff (which I doubt since I just retired from the Air Force and moving, money will be an issue) I will track mileage, engine and trans temps, and what not for whoever is wondering since we will be seeing the full range of terrain, elevation, speed limits, and ambient temperatures.

DSTRBD 07-13-2005, 05:11 PM Good luck with the move, I know what its like moving across the U.S. as I just moved from MN to TX. The good news is you get to spend some time with your new rig. The bad news is if you have kids..........you already know!
WiggyHD 07-13-2005, 06:51 PM Yep! I have 4 daughters. Only the 6 and 8 year olds are moving with us. We just got back from our first trip and the truck was flawless. The girls were great.......even after the DVD player broke. We just did it old school with the road games. The truck is one month or so old and now has 5890 miles. We bought it with 6 miles.

Wallbanger 07-13-2005, 10:05 PM I will only second the opinion that egt gauges are a must have with these LLY's I have one on my stock 04.5 and have seen 1400 pulling a 5000 lb trailor. So I'm sure any tuner would only add to that.
NOTNSUV 08-04-2005, 04:46 PM How'd the move go Mark?
Doing thread searches on the EZ and found this one so am curious how it all worked out.
... and thanks for serving. :ro)
WiggyHD 08-06-2005, 10:56 PM Well, the move went without a hitch. Well O.K., I had to have a hitch, but the truck ran great! I haven't bought the EZ or anything yet due to moving expenses. My lowest mileage (hand calculated) was 7.7, and my highest was 11.7 with a GCVW 16,240.
Thank you NOTNSUV, I was proud do do everything that I did for my family, friends, and country.

jjcgolf72 08-11-2005, 01:25 PM I just returned from a trip using the Edge EZ pulling 4000 lbs. Average speed was 70 and mpg was 12.5-12.7. I did the same run again without the EZ and received the same basic mpg.
Has anyone else experienced that?
Also when I am not pulling a trailer I feel the city/hwy mpg has dropped using the EZ. It seems like I get better city/hwy mpg without the EZ attached.
Truck now has 10,800 miles.

What level are you running it on? I've noticed a 1-2mpg improvement while running level 1. Haven't towed anything yet though (truck has 2200 miles on it). Are you hand-calculating the mileage? Don't rely completely on the DIC, most programmers make it inaccurate.

I am running level 1 on the EZ and getting less mpg. Driving the same as before and same conditions. I just towed down to KY 344 miles level 1 and got 12.5-12.7 and did the return without the EZ and rec'd the same mileage based on hand calculations.
Now I am running a tank without the EZ and then will try the next tank on level 2. The EDGE rep said some trucks may get better mileage on 2 than 1. I think that sounds silly personally but I will try.
I was getting 16.5 to max 18 city/hwy mix no towing and dropped to 15.5, but I have had to start buying diesel at a different station since the one I normally use closed.
Your thoughts are appreciated.
michael nelson 08-14-2005, 01:22 AM why do they call it the ez? where does it plug in?is it only for towing, and does it add hp and tq?

sledn 08-14-2005, 11:21 PM I keep hearing the ez in underated. Anyone with an LLY feel like it is more than 65 hp? I have driven my truck with the juice on level 3 and liked the power. Is the ez the same as 1 - 3 on the juice? That is the mystery question. Anyone with real world experience please respond.
DSTRBD 08-15-2005, 10:44 AM The EZ is definately underated. 65 HP is very conservative. I believe it is more like 90 at the rear wheels.
michael nelson 08-15-2005, 09:17 PM bump- can I still buy one if i live in california?
lilwes278 08-16-2005, 03:07 AM The Edge EZ's ratings are very conservative, in my opinion. I haven't had my truck on a dyno, but there is a very noticeable difference between stock and just level 1... Plus it's nice to blow a little smoke at people now and then! Edge EZ should be available at any Edge retailer in California, or you could always support the supporting vendors :thumb:
jjcgolf72 08-19-2005, 09:24 AM Does anyone with the Edge EZ feel their mileage has increased with city driving? Lots of stop n go slow starts. Then after that answer have you seen an increase in hwy mpg's. The reason I am asking is I actually feel it hurts mpg in city driving but my help on the hwy. If anyone saw an increase what level are you running? Edge told me to try level 2 sometimes people have reported an increase EDGE said this on the phone. My last two hwy trips have been with trailer at 12.5 mpg @ 72 mph, 2200 rpms. My next trip will be the same but this time with a wind deflector on the roof.
Dutch110 08-21-2005, 11:26 PM Just put an EZ on my LLY. Love it so far. Haven't done any mileage calculations yet. Will be towing about 8000 lbs to the track in a few weeks and will report back then. I too feel the powwer is underrated. I fugured I wouldn't be able to feel level one but was pleasantly surprised.
DMAXITOL 08-27-2005, 12:08 AM Tried level 2 for improved milage, 1141 mi no tow, flat ground ,no wind, A/C on, 65 mph. hand cal.avg 17.7 mpg level 1, 18.3 mpg level 2.
spark_man 08-27-2005, 07:15 AM Why in the world would you move from Idaho to Maryland? The pollution, weather, traffic, cost of living, crappy school system, goofy laws, high taxes, the Orioles ... My God man, what are you thinking?
Well, there is the seafood ... you'll get here just in time for the price of crabs to drop. ;-)

Our original intent was Montana or Wyoming, but we do these things for the love of family. I am living on the family farm (great hunting) and we are located at the tip of the Chesapeake Bay (great seafood, and I absolutely LOVE blue crab). I can't believe how the prices per bushel have gone up in the last 20 years! I guess I will have to lear how to get my own crabs (no jokes please:joke: )
Where are you located?
jjcgolf72 09-02-2005, 03:19 PM Just returned from a 300 mile trip into the wind at 2400 rpm's with Edge EZ on 2 - avg 17.45 mpg. Return trip on EZ #1, 2100 rpms - avg 19.15 mpg. Truck now has 12600 miles and 305 hours.
Did the same trip back in May without the EZ and got 17.65 and 19.20. I am still trying to see were this tuner helps fuel mileage. I know it has more power but I am not seeing the mileage increase. Plus the trip back in may was a totally stock vehicle.
Anybody have comments. Now I have exhaust, hi-flow and tuner and mileage is the same. But power is much better when needed.
Dutch110 09-06-2005, 11:47 PM Just got done this past weekend with a 300 mile trip to the PA mountains towing about 8k lbs. Now, I like to keep my foot in it so take that into consideration. I didn't see any mileage increase. But what the heck. I'm happy with the added power and no mileage decrease.
McRat 09-06-2005, 11:50 PM The EZ is definately underated. 65 HP is very conservative. I believe it is more like 90 at the rear wheels.
I dyno'd it at 89rwhp on Blue.
scott4262 09-07-2005, 07:16 AM 70 mile trip, empty, flat expressway, at 62 mph, 22.5 mpg on level 1. Return trip at 62 mph, 20.5 mpg on level 2, hand calculated. Don't rely on the DIC for accurate instantaneous mpg, it averages. Seems to use the miles driven/gallons used, since the last reset. I don't think the EZ made any improvement in my mileage on level 1, but, the increased power is definitely noticable. I will be switching to synthetic oil soon, we'll see if that does anything positive for the fuel mileage.
brianteel 10-03-2005, 03:34 PM so the ez unit is good then. i dont want to go really crazy just a nice plug in for more power when towing and a nice exhaust
jjcgolf72 10-03-2005, 07:02 PM I have the EZ and it is a great product. EZ on and off removal to stock with 5 minutes. Plenty of power for fun and plenty for towing. Do not expect mpg increase. I t will be the same as stock but you have power!
SLEEZ 10-03-2005, 08:54 PM I also recently added the EZ to my truck, super easy to install. I haven't towed with it yet but level 2 and 3 are very noticeable in the power dept. I will have to keep track of the mileage next time I fill up, so far the DIC is reading about the same. Although my foots been in it far more than usual this week.
brianteel 10-03-2005, 09:21 PM hmmm...thi is sounding better then the more expensive ones
