I have a new 2005 Duramax and I am wanting to buy a tuner or a programmer have made my mind up yet on which one to get, but I am wondering should you wait until you have put a certain amount of miles on it before you start messing with aftermarket accessories if so what would be the mileage to start at.

Put 1000 miles on it first. break it in I mean. Dont run it hard, be easy on the brakes then buy one. I went through the same thing. The only problem was for 2004.5, there were no tuners available at that time. I had to wait 6 months. And I'm glad I did.

thats what I did as well. there wasn't anything out at the time being so I just waited while I put some miles on her and let all the gears/engine break in a bit. once the edge was out for the LLY I purchased/installed it.
There are still others that have installed tuners right off the dealer lot and had no problems. Its up to you..personally, I put some miles on it first.

Banks rep says that they get broken in at about 70,000 miles...

Course he's selling six-paks and airflow systems..

I think I'm going to do the latter and add some gages so I know what's going on. The airflow package will do little other than reduce the temps. Then if I'm getting too hot I can look at something else. Right now it's still in breakin.

Seems like the longer the site is around the longer the time to break in a Dmax becomes.

70,000 miles????? Any moving part in contact with another moving part that many times (rpm) over the course of 70,000 miles, if it ain't broken in it ain't EVER gonna be.

There's what's called an initial break-in, and a complete break-in.

The initial break-in occurs over the first about 10,000 miles. Interestingly, 80% of the engine's break in, in respect to top ring sealing occurs in the first 20 miles, or first half hour of it running!

The break-in that people say takes place over close to a hundred thousand miles is point-of-view. It all lies within one's reception of the definition of the so called "break-in".

If it's in terms of reaching top compression - then - yes the engine is not completely broken-in for many miles. Top compression may not be reached until 1, maybe even 2 hundred k miles. As long as it goes up, performance and therefore fuel economy, hence efficiency (or vice versa) of the motor will keep going up.

I would install the chip no sooner than a 1000 miles as others have suggested. Even right off the lot shouldn't really pose a problem. Personally though, I would wait until about 5-10k miles.

Either way, have fun with your chip!

Later.
