: which level to use!!!
bullshooter 07-12-2005, 08:57 PM Finally, got my predator sitting here waiting to install. I am planning a trip to nebraska from oregon with my 28' travel trailer. I think it weighs around 6 to 7 thousand pounds. which level would get me the best mileage 40 or 60?? My first thought was 40 the tow mode since it will probably be hot and lots of mountains to cross. lets hear your thoughts.
brett6.6 07-12-2005, 09:37 PM You Could Probaly Use The 60 Just Becareful And Watch Those Egts On Those Long Grades. 60hp Will Probaly Get Pretty Warm. The Predator Runs Way Hotter Than Othger Programmers In Its Class. Go 40 If You Waqnt To Be On The Safe Side
BullydogPowered 07-12-2005, 09:44 PM I HEARD on here that even in 40hp the Predator is VERY hot.
01Duramax6spd 07-12-2005, 10:16 PM What brings ya to NE? It's a nice place to live but most people don't vacation here.
Melvin Hatcher 07-12-2005, 10:59 PM What brings ya to NE? It's a nice place to live but most people don't vacation here.I can't find all the fuses that's called for to be removed in the Predator manuel
dogger 07-13-2005, 12:51 AM You really do not have to pull the fuses. Just make sure your lights, radio, and heater/ac is off. I have not had a problem using this method
ratlover 07-13-2005, 09:37 AM I believe the onstar stuff is what pisses off the download? I duno.
I would run it on its lowest level. You also have to worry about your trans. Keep an eye on your EGT's and you will be ok
bullshooter 07-13-2005, 09:02 PM I loaded the 40 last night, figured better safe than sorry. didn't need to pull any fuses.
01duramax6spd- going for a family reunion, its held back there every 5 years.

I don't see any gauges in your sig...I won't tow with the predator in any tune with out gauges. When you do get gauges you will see why I say this...
bullshooter 07-15-2005, 02:48 PM I plan on gauges but don't know if I will have them before my trip, so if you have gauges and the egt's start getting to high what do you do? will I need to worry about egt's on the 40 setting? I don't drive like a madman but I like to keep up with everyone else.
ratlover 07-15-2005, 02:59 PM You roll off the throttle some, sometimes you can downshift the truck and it will maintain speed and bring the egt's down.
ratlover 07-15-2005, 03:00 PM I have never towed with the predator, I honestly cant tell ya. I would assume you will be fine even in steep grades with it turned down to its lowest setting but I duno???
MaxFarmer 07-16-2005, 01:46 PM I tow normally with my predator on 40 (all the time) and my hot juice at level 2. I dont think I'd try climing any passes like a madman at this setting though. Especially if its as hot there as it is here. You should be safe with just the predator on 40. I personally wouldnt worry about it too much unless you really notice the truck pulling hard. Typically I see my hottest egt's when I start trying to push it and the truck just doesnt seem to accellerate as much. You will hear your turbo working pretty good too.
Basically, set it on 40, use Tow/Haul and dont worry about it.

01Duramax6spd 07-16-2005, 11:54 PM Bullshooter; Where in NE do your relatives live? I may know them.Seems that there are a couple of us Nebraskan's on here.
bullshooter 07-17-2005, 07:17 PM 01Duramax6spd; we are headed to south west part of NE, will be spending a few days and having the family picnic at lake Ogallala campground, also the author county renuion in the sand hills. The renuions are nice but the trip going and coming is the real fun.
WanaDmxsub 07-17-2005, 07:35 PM I usually force a downshift at the bottom of a grade, (truck falls off to much for me before it shifts). On the way back from the lake today I let it down shift on its own. Saw temps in the 1350 range. About that time it would down shift and the temps would drop to the 1k range. On one hill I saw 1400+ and then the truck down shifted in to 3rd. This in 90 deg ambient, Pred 40 tune and towing a 7K TT.
01Duramax6spd 07-18-2005, 03:03 PM Well Bullshooter,I'm just north of there a ways.
bullshooter 08-08-2005, 07:29 PM well I thought an update was in order, I did get my new x-monitor gauges in before I left, and wow i was shocked at how the egts are directly related to your right foot.
The first day over some medium grades with the predator at 40, my egts reached over1500
After that I installed the stock tune back and very rarely went over 1250, there was a couple high 1300's.
bullshooter 08-08-2005, 07:31 PM now that I'm back and not towing anymore, I got the 65 installed and lovin it!!
Burnin Mad Max 08-09-2005, 01:18 AM I tow a fully enclosed four-place sled trailer on the 40horse setting with no temp issues. I also have a 4" turbo-back exhaust and 35" tires but it humps along through the hills of northern Wisconsin never even threatening to downshift. It runs along like there's nothing behind it at 72-75mph never even wavering. I have not however even tried the 65 setting so can't comment on that. For me it's 40hp in the winter and 120hp during construction season. I do recomend gauges if you wish to run any setting above 65 though.
LTChip 08-12-2005, 05:33 PM I run my Edge at Level 4 (90?) daily and at Level 2 (40?) when towing. I dont have guages yet but I run a 4" exhaust and a K&N OEM replacement air filter.
