Was wondering if this is and edge problem, last night on my buddy's 05 he was on the freeway and it all of a sudden started like knocking real bad and smoking really bad, This has happened previously, but it has been atleast two months ago.
05 Dmax/Allison, straight piped with fingerstick installed, incase it helps.

Need more details. Is there any special conditions this happens at or does it happen all the time. By reading what you said about 2 months ago it sounds like it doesn't. He could have a harness issue or an injector/injector pump issue. I think he should remove the Edge and see if he can get it to happen again. If not then put the edge back on and if it happens again have him contact Edge.

I have a 2004.5 duramax. My engine would stall and loose power over 2000 rpm occassionally with the edge installed. I have recently taken that out and replaced with the banks big hoss package....much better.
