: Where to get the best starter, what type?
I have three 6.2 vehicles. One starts by just bumping the key, one I cant get started and one has intermittent slow cranking.
The one I can't start only cranks at a fair speed. It has a locally rebuilt starter (by business that has been around for 50 years). It has double the thickness battery cables, all connections area clean. Before I had the starter rebuilt I might have overheated it a bit, and it never was the same. I thought they would have fixed that, but the problem could still be elsewhere. I am trying to add shims now.
But anyway, who has had a starting problem where changing the starter made it spin like it was new again and what/where did you get it? What type gear reduction or the older style?
Anyone use some type of insulating blanket with great sucess?
Does that retard circuit (sender at back of right cylinder head) have any benifits?
smackzed 06-19-2010, 11:05 AM I burned out my starter either breaking one of the arms of the armature or burning out a spot in the field wiring. Still cranked but slowly like almost drained batteries. Bought a used OEM starter from the wrecker and it fired right up. Direct drive and it spins plenty fast for me.
I WOULD NOT EVER buy a chinese made starter at parts stores or off Ebay or Kijiji or whatever. There are lots of posts here from people who bought them with lifetime warranties or whatever and are replacing them every few months. My time is worth something and that is also one hell of an inconvenience having a no start issue.
Either go with good used or factory product. Most like the gear reduction which the 6.5's use. Should be easy enough to find.
IamDave0887 06-19-2010, 05:51 PM If you have the direct drive 27MT starter they are really easy to rebuild yourself. It cost me $25 to rebuild my 27MT, and that included a new solenoid, brushes, holders, springs, bushings, and a cut down on the shops lathe.
Much cheaper than buying a new starter anywhere. All those chinese parts chain starters are crap. They are made of inferior parts, and will not last.

IamDave0887 06-20-2010, 08:43 PM If you need your starter rebuilt I'm local to you and i rebuild them. Which starter do you have? The gear reduction or the direct drive? The direct drive is cheaper parts wise.
Starter was rebuilt, only has about 15 min time on it
smackzed 06-20-2010, 09:10 PM Try switching starters from the engine that starts easy. Could be the engine is seized. At least eliminates or confirms starter asthe problem

and it's still no good? I hope for your sake it's the starter and not an engine problem(seized, something busted internally preventing it from turning, etc).
Regardless of what starter it is, you can pull the starter and test it with a set of jumper cables and a battery. Just hook it up like you would in the truck and jump the solenoid energize terminal and the starter should roar to life. If not then it's dead.
When i rebuilt my 27MT i got about 2 weeks out of it before a field coil shorted out due to age and the starter turned into a giant short to ground. Acted like dead batteries(click and the lights went dim), even with a brand new set installed.
It spins the engine at a fair speed. Dual batteries, doesn't speed up much when assist with car and jumper cables. Took out glow plugs and now spins at good speed (not great), but has a wine to it so, when get back to working on it will try some shims, if no improvement, will try another starter.
Diaric 06-21-2010, 01:37 PM these starters rarely need shims, that was sbc issue. if you had your original unshimmed starter rebuilt, it should not need them now
