Today I had my LMM smog tested for the new law for my registration. All I can say what a racket! The tech opened the hood looked at the engine for about 30seconds, looked under for the catalytic converter. He then increased the idle speed with the accelerator three times and said ok you pass.
So thirty eight dollars later I was on my way home...

How is CA broke, again?

Yea, that CA smog check is a joke it took less than a minute. He peeked under the truck, looked under the hood and charged me $40. Then I had to pay $664 for DMV registration tags. I think half that money goes to pay for the California weather tax. What a rip.

Glad I live in Indiana where we have nothing to do with Smog testing.

I would also like to know how CA is broke with registration fee's like those! IN is cheap compared to that.

Blood pressure rising... Mine should arrive sometime in the next couple weeks. I hate this state. I have to take my 1989 Camaro to a "test only" station which pretty much means they get to charge me double for no apparent reason. Pretty soon they're going to make me smog my travel trailer. Oh well, I guess we have to pay for all the welfare crackheads California has.

Bill, I'm just glad they didn't scrutinize your truck and go out of there way to find something wrong. My brother just had his LLY done.....They peaked under the hood, the inspector said they could careless about the intakes and filters. They then revved the motor to see if it smoked, check to see his CAT was on and that was it. Oh yeah, my registration for my LMM was over 6 bills.....what a ripoff

It's not that easy, after 6 months with expired reg, the vehicle could be towed and held in storage until the reg fees have been paid not to mention daily storage fees.........

Plus if you register it in another state and they catch you the fine, tow, and storage fees are not worth it. I was born and raised in that state and the parents still live there and I dont know how they do it.

Our registration is $48 a year with a $14.50 safety inspection every year. No smog on diesels and they only smog gas vehicles if you live in one of the larger counties like Harris (where Houston is). I think there is like 8 smog counties for gassers, but even then its $40.

We don't even have inspection stickers in New Mexico, you can drive any old mosquito fogger you can drag up out of the junk. If you can make the headlights and taillights work you are good to go. Otherwise, just drive during daylight hours. Brake lights and turn signals are nice but not necessary. Sometimes it's cheaper to pay the occasional ticket than make that stuff work. :D

Of course, the DPF is one of the "major" emissions items they look for on our trucks. Unless you get some dork that doesn't know what he is looking for but if they do catch you with it off then you will have to pay for another inspection to get it passed. I hate giving this State money for anything, so to pay them twice would really piss me off!

Yup such BS that some people actually care about making sure our children have clean air to breathe.
Why can't everyone just be selfish SOB's like the rest of us, and let us have whatever we want. If I own a business that's polluting the ground water, people should just move. I should be able to make money without any restrictions. Damn Govmint! What are they thinking trying to protect everyone by infringing on my God given right to pollute as much as I want.

I don't think he is complaining so much about the $47 for his forced stupid "smog check" and I don't think he really wants to just "pollute" as you infer. If you look at his sig, he still has his "non polluting DPF" devices still intact.

His point as is mine, is that it's just more BS that the F'd up government shoves down our throats to give them more money for their frivolous spending and having to pay the salaries of too many people that do nothing in government. Here in California they doubled our car registration to pay for all the "free" programs for the border jumping illegals. Why do AMERICAN citizens have to pay for people that illegally "invade" our country? Because the government says we have to? No thanks, people like you can have more government, I personally would like my tax dollars back and the government out of my business.

Why does the government have any business in telling me how much air pressure to put in my tires with the stupid sensors they shoved down our throats? As of February 1st, Californians can only buy two boxes of ammunition at a time and must show a drivers license and give a fingerprint thanks to our great government!

Sounds like you are all for the government running your life and telling you what to do, not me, keep the government out of my life and out of my business. Wouldn't it be nice if the government took care of the military guys like it should? And took care of the Americans that actually belong here instead of the border jumpers that invade our country to have babies here?

Like it's been said, "I'll keep my Freedom, guns, and money. You can keep the CHANGE"!

Here in south FL 90$ ayear total . If one state can keep its cost down why can't they all too much welfare in states like CA & CT

Don't know what you were paying but my registration was $236 for 2 years, so about $118 a year to the state for plates, plus local property taxes to my town of about $400 a year or so on my 08, which are tax deductible on my federal income tax's, and NO Diesel Smog Checks yet that I am aware of.

dragon Tax is differant town to town based on mill rate and value. My last mill rate was 28 $ per 1,000 value. my town used an average value from three sources. An 09 duramax has to be worth at least 40 k I was paying 700 plus on a 4 year old 1500 when I left. As far as a tax deduction goes I will give you 28 cents for a dollar all day long. I didn't know diesels where excempt my bag.

Diesel Dragon
01-11-2011, 04:23 PM
Your right skmct every town has a different mill rate to calculate tax's on property. Luckily my town is a little lower than most, about a 18% mill rate, and they do go by book value on a vehicle but only use 75% of that value so they don't have too many arguments from residents about the exact dollar amount the truck or car is worth.

And .28 cents is no bargain but at least it's something back, and better paying the tax's to my local town and not the state or fed's.

But like you said it's expensive no matter what way you cut it. :(

If you want something really crazy I see in the local paper Mcmansions that are for sale in richer towns that have a $20,000 and up tax bill every year.

Sorry about the off topic everyone but at least no Diesel smog check in CT yet and I believe it's $20 every year or maybe 2 years for a gas smog check.

Looking closer at the fees on my DMV renewal:

Reg Fee: $57
License Fee: $280
Weight Fee: $204
County Fee: $11
Smog Abatement Fee: $20

I wondered what a "Smog Abatement Fee" was so upon further checking it looks like I (or anyone with a vehicle 6 or less years old) won't have to do a smog check biannually?

From the DMV website:
"Vehicles registered in areas subject to the biennial smog certification program (http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/smogfaq.htm#BM2539) are required to submit evidence of a smog certification every other renewal period. Owners of vehicles six or less model years old (http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/StdPage.asp?Body=/Smogcheck/doineed.htm)will pay an annual smog abatement fee (http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/fees/miscellaneous.htm) for the first six registration years instead of being required to provide a biennial smog certification."

That's pretty good news, now if I could just get rid of that damned weight fee of $204!! :(

Here is a break down of all those fees and where they go:
Registration Fee: California DMV & CHP
License Fee: 90% CHP, 10% State general Fund
County/District Fees: depending on your County - Call Boxes, CalID, Other Misc Fees Approved by the Board of Supervisors for the County. LA County has $10 worth.
VLF: 100% Return to the City or County where the vehicle is registered.

CHP gets the majority of it as they are funded from vehicle registrations.

Got to pay those high union Calif. wages and benefits and retirements for their overpaid services. You know the cost of living in that state will only go up with 2/3 of the state on welfare and the other is mostly gov. employees.
