: Power from new D-max's
rick65 07-12-2005, 01:14 PM Hey guys, I am over here from the diesel stop (ford) and looking to buy a new diesel. I have narrowed my search to ford and chevy, 05 models. I was wondering how much power, hp and tq, you could get out of the duramax with simple mods. For ex. intake, exhaust, Predator, intercooler etc. And if you put the same mods on the PSD which would be the better truck? Thanks again and Great site. MIKE
lakingslayer 07-12-2005, 03:11 PM Welcome. Intake really doesn't buy you any seat of the pants HP. The exhaust will gain you a little but mostly you'll gain lower EGT's. Most people haven't done anything with the intercooler's on the DMAX's. The predator can get you to the 340rwhp area give or take a few hp. Of course that is with a modified trans since the allison doesn't like more than 200-250lb ft of torque or 90hp added to the motor and to get to 340rwhp the Predator has to be on the 120hp setting. I can't answer your last question without being biased.
ssduramax 07-12-2005, 03:23 PM I can tell you that my boss fried the tranny in is Ford power stroke with just a Superchips programmer, so they all have their weaknesses.
McRat 07-12-2005, 03:28 PM Exhaust ($200), Lift Pump ($90), Tuning (~$1100) brought the Blue truck to 466HP/928TQ at the tires. Or 220RWHP over stock.
The trans WILL NOT HOLD it without beefing it up.
shawnrans 07-12-2005, 04:15 PM The D-Max will net you more power thus far. Dollar for dollar anyway.
With the 6.0 you can get about 430-450 RWH max. Ford is having more
problems right now, mostly electronics. Both trucks are great! If you are
into creature comforts, GM has the best. Just don't buy a Dodge whatever
you do!!!!!!!!:ro)
rick65 07-12-2005, 06:52 PM Thanks for the replies so fast. Does anyone have any experience with any of banks performance? I was also thinking of getting the big hoss package minus the six gun and just get the predator or some other tune. One more ?, anyone have an SCT tune on their D-max. I know the PSD's run really good with these tunes, not sure about the duramax. Thanks again.
Dmax6.6 07-12-2005, 10:05 PM I just traded my 2004 6.0 powerstroke for GMC with the D/A. They both have thier pros and cons. Overall I think the Duramax is a more durable engine. Ford bought back my 2003 under DSB and put me in a 2004. The 2004 constanly blew coolant out of the degass bottle. I tried to get ford to replace the head gaskets but the wouldnt. They kept replaing radiator caps and tanks. I was going to head stud the 6.0 but GM made me such a sweet deal that I couldnt pass it up.
PSD6LFX4 07-13-2005, 12:42 AM look at the charts, the Powerstroke with a SCMT only will put you in the 420 rwhp with stock exhaust. I dynod mine at 455 rwhp with a SCMT/Cat-Back Exhaust/Replacement Airaid filter. I have about 1,000 dollars in aftermarket and the ford tranny WILL hold it, don't believe these guys when they say the fords trannys aren't stout because they are as tough or tougher than the allison. The Torqueshift must learn when you chip it and most guys as soon as they program it they go romping it at 40 mph spinning the tires and then wonder why its broke......

Stall it up to 20PSI in 4WD and launch. Repeat that about 200 times 1320ft and report back.
Even a stock Allison will handle 450+ rwhp when you don't use it.
Since you are 455rwhp, I assume you're running at least mid 13's on a routine basis and getting trophies with your sled pulling efforts, right?
RaceHemi 07-13-2005, 09:02 AM The SCT derived tunes(ie: SCT, Innovative Diesel, etc.) for the 6.0 are excelllent and for ~$400 you get an engine and trans tune. SCT is still working on the Duramax/Allison editing software so we will have to wait before we have the editing ability. I have the SCT Advantage software for the Ford 6.0 and after barely scratching the surface of it's abilities I can't wait until SCT releases the Duramax/Allison version.
Mcrat - You didn't include the price of your trans upgrade, that puts your investment towards $5-6k! With the 6.0 you can get the SCT based tunes for $400-$500, have 420-460rwhp and have one of the best shifting transmissions I've been around. For $1100 you can get the SCT Advantage editing software AND a datalogger with programmable inputs. Then unlike the Duramax/Allison 1000, if you don't like a particular upshift/downshift shift characteristic, shift point, or converter lockup, or engine parameter for that matter, you have complete control and can make adjustments accordingly.
Will the 6.0/TS last at those levels? I think the appropriate question is not will it last but how long will it last???? Innovative Diesel has 80-100k on their test truck without any trans issues.
Don't try to take top speed honors with a Duramax against a 6.0 that has the speed limiter removed!!!!
