I put one on my 6.2 truck. What i did was i got a standard gasoline tachometer. i bought a big racing one with a shift light, and it looked pretty good.
Then i bought a tachomater interface from www.dakotadigital.com (http://www.dakotadigital.com). and i hooked it up though my alternator. i had to replace my alternator for it to have the extra wire for it. but you might have one anyways. the inface has many caibrations so you can calibrate it properly. i never did. i doubled the rpm. so 3,000 would actually be 6,000 on the tach. that way im using most of the tach. ):h
if you look closely you can see the tach right above the cowl induction.

I use a tach made by DATCON.
runs off the alternator. any alternator guy can open yours up and add the one litttle wire it needs.
Or there is a way to use a regular automotive tach, and drive it useing an optical sensor off the crank pulley (paint the pulley white and black)

I like the Datcon tach myself, goes to 4K. those automotive tachs all have to big of a scale on them. we donlt need to see 8k on the tach.

I use an autometer and I like it. Have it screwed in to the pillar right on top of the dash. I'll get a picture when I can. part number is #2888. its 2 5/8", full sweep and all black with white numbers. 5,000 rpms. comes with a sensor and big hoseclamp, which you attach to the oustide alternator cover. easy and simple, and works good. about $100-$120. bought mine at the local 4x4 shop while in washington state.

well when i first put it on it didnt work. problem was my alternator just failed and I didnt know it.

do a search for "autometer 2888" or "auto meter 2888"

they also make a 5" one I believe.

also Isspro makes one, but dont know a thing about it.

I have the automter tach on my suburban that works off the alternator
On my Jimmmy I have the ISS pro tach.It has two small magnet that are glued to the balancer with a sensor that bolts to the front of the oil pan.
Both work good but I like the ISS tach better. It seems alittle more accurate becuase it senses the actual crank RPM verses the alternator RPM.

Have any of you guys run a tach off of the speedsensor drive on the oil pump? I have gotten my hands on a drive and was wondering what type of tach you should use?

Not sure how that would work, my 6.2 uses that spot for a vac pump.
I have one of those ISSPRO tach sitting around here somewhere, had it mounted in the spot where the factory clock goes in my 82, but didn;t like it, just wasn;t visible enough, on top of being small.

blalley, how big is the isspro tach, sounds like around 2and1/16 or so? The Datcon tach where can you find it? How big? Should work with my cs style alternator, pretty sure that the factory picked up signal off of it.

yes, the isspor tach is small, fits where the factry guages go.
Datcon unit is about 4 inch or so, never measured it.
Datcon makes industrial guages, should be bale to get one at any good guage shop.
I made a metal enclosure for it, sits right above my t-case shifter on the tranny hump, just behind the heater vents outlet.
Is adjustable for however many poles your alternator has.
here is the link to the site.

(JFTR, anytime I am looking for info, before even google, I just type the company name or part of it, with a dot com on the end, 9 times out of ten it hits it)
brian.
OH, I bought mine thru these guys

not sure where you are, but datcon has a list of dealers.
