: A/C compressor
Nirts 06-15-2010, 01:04 PM Well it's summertime and I need the a/c for my passengers. I like the 5-60 system (all windows down and do 60mph) but the girls fuss about their hair. The dye leaked around the whole compressor. Can the seals be replaced?
Someone told me that a compressor from a 454 gasser would work on a 6.2? Is this true? True or not, what numbers should I look for at the salvage yards?
Thanks guys!!!
Diaric 06-15-2010, 01:25 PM gas ones mount differently. different brackets, and they are usually smaller. the 6.2's till about 84 or so used the huge A6 compressor. after that was the smaller, more effiecent HR6. they were used in some gas cars as well, but the hose hook up was slightly different. i got a brand new one off ebay out of texas for about 45$.
Nirts 06-15-2010, 03:35 PM So I could have an A6 or HR6? Are they interchangeable for the diesels?
I googled "rebuild a/c compressor" and hot rod mag web page shows a rebuild article.
Nirts 06-15-2010, 03:46 PM duh.... found the diesel place archive in a google search. Looks llike I'll have to see which one I have. A6 - HR6 will work but have different brackets. A4 will not work.
Diaric 06-15-2010, 03:53 PM your 88 should have the HR6 ..
looks like this

Nirts 06-16-2010, 08:19 AM Looks like it. I didn't get any numbers off it. The bracket that mounts it has a spacer so I'm thinking it's the "smaller" HR6. Thanks for the help!
Diaric 06-16-2010, 08:47 AM ys, i've posted pics of the bracket differences. the smaller one has all the brackets offset to make up the size difference
facepirte 06-23-2010, 02:20 AM I work at a salvage yard and just bought an 88 suburban with no ac. I looked at the interchange for mine and it listed pretty much any 6.2 or 2.8 from around 84 to 88 if i remember correctly. If I can remember I will print out or take some screen shots of the applications tomorrow.
IamDave0887 06-23-2010, 09:01 AM you can make either compressor fit, but if youv'e already got the HR6 then go with it. If you got lines and the brackets for the A6 it'll bolt in from what i'm told. my blazer is an 85 and i believer it had the HR6, but since the entire system is gone, i'm putting in an A6 comp, lines and brackets. I just hope it goes smoothly.
NetBSD 06-23-2010, 11:30 AM quick highjack if no one minds....
what type of refrigerant do these older 6.2's take? are these the old R12 or 134a? i need to recharge my system but am new to the AC world, i usually rip them off right away but the misses complains about the hair thing all the time
facepirte 06-23-2010, 01:18 PM the pic labeled untitled is a direct fit, #2 and #3 says you have to plug a switch on the rear of the compressor

Stock they came with R12..... Shops aren't allowed to recharge an R12 system anymore though, so if you take it to a shop it HAS to be converted to R134............

If you know an old school mechanic odds are they have a set of R12 gauges and everything to work R12 somewheres if they are A/C certified. Finding R12 on the other hand is tough. The local Autozone actually has the R12 charging hoses new in package, in stock regularly.
OR you can do the work yourself, like i plan to do, and charge it with R12 if you have any that is.

i have plenty of R12 i got for a good deal so thats not an issue, but how would i know if someone already had it converted to 134? i see no stickers or lables under the hood but that doesnt say someone didnt peel em off
IamDave0887 06-23-2010, 11:36 PM What service ports does it have? Are they thread on or quick snaps? the quick snap ones are the R134a connectors. Screw on fittings are R12.
When converted there are adapters that thread onto the factory R12 service ports to "convert" them to the R134A connectors.
