Hi, I got a new 2500 HD Duramax that I am using to tow my travel trailer.
I want to protect my fuel system, pump and injectors.... I purchased the Nicktane 2 micron pre filter and I would like to add a water separator as well. I know there is a kit - very specific for the Duramax 2500HD from 'Racor', that filters at a 10 micron level with a water separator and a 200 watt fuel heater. I am not sure which way to go....?
I figured since I have the 2 micron filter already, I'd go with a very good water separator such as the Dahl ADF20.
The Dahl filter is listed with a flow rate of 120 GPH (U.S.) (454 LPH) and a flow resistance of 1.0 in. Mercury @ 120 GPH.
My question is... Is this a good setup to go with, and will both filters work when hooked up in line as pre-filters to to OEM filter? I would mount both filters inside the rear driver side fender together with the 'Nicktane' kit.

Any comments or recommendations...? Is there a better water separator available maybe....? I have a document and GM is recommending the 'Racor' kit... but since it only filters to 10 microns - I think the 'Nicktane' -- the 2 micron CAT filter is a much better solution. Just have to get rid of the water now....
Thanks for any advice, Peter

I would have thought that some of the experts would have an opinion....?

Well, I called a Diesel repair shop and they recomennded to go with the 'Racor ' kit for the 2500 HD (LLY). They actuallt offer a 2 micron filter. GM was recommending the 10 micron version....
I placed my order this morning.
Cheers - :)

Kobi,

Are you using the Racor in addition to the Nicktane, as a water separator, or is this instead of the Nicktane (when used with the 2-micron filter)? Will you still be getting an additional unit for a separator, or does the Racor do it all?

Thanks,

Joseph

Hi Joseph,
I am using both filters - the Nicktane 'CAT' filter mounted inside the fender and I will install the 'Racor Filter inside the fender as well. Both filters will be just inches away from the tank in the main feed line.
I contacted a commercial Diesel store up here in Toronto Canada and they new all about the 2500HD injector issues, the person was nice enough and send me a copy of the internal e-mail that was send to Service Managers and Shop Supervisors. In that e-mail GM Canada highly recommends to install the Racor kit which was specifically designed for the 2500HD.
It's got a 10 micron filter, a fuel seperator and a 200 watt fuel heater all in one package. The wiring harness is all custom made for the 2500HD Duramax. The dash warning light for water all that plugs right into the existing wiring harness. I ordered the kit with the optinal protection shield around it. The 'Racor' kit mounts under the truck next to the driver side frame rail. I will try to change that if I can and mount it also inside the rear fender together with the other filter. The one thing I was not aware of is - that you can get the 'Racor' also with a 2 microm filter - and that's what I did.....
GM recomends a fuel heater for Canadian winters and in their bulletin they say that the fuel system is designed for clean commercial grade Diesel fuel available at retail fuel supply facilities... How do they expect to get always perfectly clean fuel - and no water with it... it makes me wonder.

Cheers, Peter :)

I just finished my installation of both filters. I had to put the Racor filter at its regular location. I prefilled the Cat filter with fuel and did the regular bleeding procedure - runs like a charm. Now - we are ready for our next big camping (towing) trip. The wiring for the 200 watt fuel heater and the water in fuel sensor was straight forward. All connectors are the same as from the factory, a very nice kit.
