I have been seeing a lot of fuel mileage threads lately and thought i would bring this thread up. Not too long ago, in a land (not to) far away, JJs Dumax came up with this great idea to get every member on the same sheet of music (ie. ensuring everybody used the same method for computing the MPG's of these fine machines we ride around in:rolleyes:).

For all the new guys out there in DP land, here is a link so you can catch up.

Since that thread is closed, I thought for sure it needed to be revised to keep the members from having to search for it.

Oh, and JJ, I am working on an a little spreadsheet for computing mileage that you may like.:D
I will post when i get finished going thru my receipts.

Hi SSD,

Thought I'd share my spreadsheet with you in case it may give you ideas for the one you are working up. As you can see, I haven't had my truck long, but I have had a mix of towing (7000# enclosed car hauler) and empty. Mostly highway miles. I enter gallons, trip miles, price per gallon and hours when I think about it. The Notes column helps me keep track of what I was doing on that tankfull.

Hope you find something useful here. I use JJ's method for fueling.

Lyle

Great minds think alike.

my spread sheet looks almost identical minus the hours column and the odometer reading. oh, i added where i filled up too, just for tracking in case i get bad fuel somewhere.

You know, I still can't hardly believe that big honkin' truck is getting better mileage than my Jeep. I love my truck! :D I'll be installing a tonneau cover this week and will be interested to see what (if any) impact that has on fuel economy. On the spreadsheet, I was thinking that I'd probably add a column for "maintenance" (ie: oil changes, filter change, etc) just so all the vehicle related record keeping would be in one place and the cost of maintenance could be included in the "Total Cost" column.

i dont know how familiar you guys are with excel and spreadsheets, but there are some cool little tricks you can use to make it easy on yourself, if you turn the spreadsheet into a "List" located under the "Data" tab, then it will Auto-Create a new row for you anytime you input a new row of information.... also, it can do formulas for you, by totaling your price column, or you can sort any column inside the List without affecting any other columns. If you guys want you can send me your spreadsheets and I can update them to be a little more user-friendly. Good idea keeping track though, I will start soon myself.

If you want to really get next-level, you use Access to enter (nicely formatted forms) and store data, as well as print reports. Most of the calculations can be done within Access, but you can always have it export the data to Excel, do the heavy lifting there, and reimport the data back in for storage and reporting.

ooo, I forgot about Access. I used it in my last job. I like it once its set up. I better get started.
