: it's in and IT RUNS! (sorta)
Cowracer 07-11-2005, 08:41 AM After a marathon a$$-busting session this weekend, I single handedly got my Avant 18:1 motor installed. Outside, in 100 degree heat, even (I lost 7 lbs over the weekend, mostly water)
It was set in place by 7:00pm saturday, and hooked up and running by 4:30 on sunday.
I have a couple of problems left to iron out. #2 cyl is dead as a hammer. I don't even get sprurts out of the injector line when I crack it. But, I noticed a fuel leak of some sort up underneath the intake. I think that maybe the line nut at the IP for #2 is loose.
I got an exhaust leak at the crossover, I might have screwed up the donut gaskets, or assemebled it cock-eyed.
The good news is my "Split-Flow" rear head cooling systems is in and doesn't leak. I took some pictures with my good camera, and I will post them tomorrow. It was an easy install with the motor out on an engine stand, but it would be a cast-iron ***** to do it with the engine in the truck.
One more night of wrenching, and I think I am done!

CanadianRigger 07-11-2005, 11:05 AM Um, dumb question time again. What the hell is a Avant High Zoot Engine?
Cowracer 07-11-2005, 11:12 AM Um, dumb question time again. What the hell is a Avant High Zoot Engine?
I have an unusual Dialect (according to my wife)
To me, any thing all decked out is "high-zoot" :D . Like in an old time Zoot Suit. Things can also be "Zooty" As in, that boat was pretty zooty for a bass boat.
Therefore, its my term for the Diesel Depot (Avant) engine with all the bells and whistles.
But C'mon Rigger, I expected a question about my rear head cooling mod, not about my description of my engine. Ya getting soft in your old age?

Ranger391v 07-11-2005, 09:29 PM Hey Cowracer
Zooty??????????? :)
Old pic,. I don't have the MotorGuide anymore, replaced it with a Minn Kota Maxxum.Wished I had the money for all the facny 6.5 upgrades, but them dang $20/each Luckycraft baits keep me knocked back, plus gas in that Big Block Johnson 200. I'm interested in that fancy cooling system, what is it????? (My turnip truck question of the day, LOL)http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y178/Ranger391v/Ranger391vstarboardside.jpg

So far, I am impressed with it. It is a hell of a lot 'crisper' than the old engine. Whether thats the 18:1, or the timing gears or whatever, who knows?
It sounds different. Meaner. I mean it still has that familiar 6.5 sound, but with an 'edge' that it didnt have before. My wife even noticed, and she wouldnt know the difference between a diesel engine and a toaster.
It starts like and absolute dream. Granted its not cold here, but it starts much better than I remember the old one doing. It idles well, and seems smooth throught the RPM range.
The only hitch in the Giddy-up is that I am having a hard time making any boost. I can barely get 3-5 lbs out of it. It sounds like I might have screwed up the passenger side crossover connection. I think I the pipe isn't sealed up on the spout. That would let exhaust that normally would spin the turbo escape without doing any work. Downright lazy of 'em if you ask me.
I would have fixed my downpipe, but its raining here, and I detest laying on wet ground to work on a car/truck. It's cleared up today, so maybe I can look at it tonight.
Oh! And BTW. if you forget to hook up the passenger side battery ground cable, you get all kids of weird electrical problems. (like my wipers would not shut off, fuel guage and speedo acting wonky, and a low volt reading), that one is fixed now.

Chicago TDP 07-13-2005, 01:19 PM I can't wait to get my engine now.
