: Engine Knock
Frank Blum 07-10-2005, 11:35 PM We just got back from a trip to Ouray/Silverton, Colorado. The truck ran great the whole time. The day after we set up in the KOA at Ouray the truck sounded like it had a rod knocking. The KOA is 7200' and we just went up from there to over 11,000. It seemed louder the higher we went. It went away on the way home and is back to purring like a kitten. Any ideas? Later! Frank
coyotekid 07-11-2005, 01:21 AM Altitude sickness?
Later! Kelly
Horse Trainer 07-11-2005, 06:11 PM Probably was mostly altitude - mine will get a lot quieter when I go down from 6500', a bit noisier as I climb (does it a lot less on B2o). Did you get any smoking along with it? Maybe also an injector that is a bit out on the balance rate.
Frank Blum 07-12-2005, 12:04 AM No smoke what so ever. Started good, ran good but the solo mileage was down quite a bit. I towed over 900 miles. The mileage was right on my average both ways. Later! Frank
tophog 07-12-2005, 12:51 AM Mine smoked a lot more, even at idle @ 5000 ft. to the point I thought the injectors decided to take a dump. Came back home (300 ft elevation) and all symptoms gone. Definately had me second guessing it.
bhinrichs 07-12-2005, 01:57 AM Frank,
I live in the Denver area, and make the run from Denver to Grand Junction 2 to 3 times a year. Mine does not knock louder going over the passes (I'm not towing though). Mine is just louder than most. Dealer says it is fine, but, it is much louder than any other duramax I've parked next too.
Most of my noise seems to be "it sounds more like a normal diesel" than a duramax. It is not the pilot injection, again, so says the dealer.
What I have noticed is that I get a knock that just comes and goes. My mileage seems to be the best going through the mountains.
If you ever do find out what the knock is, I'd like to know. The dealer suggested "normal bearing noise". Mine is stock and approaching 74k on original injectors.

Mackin 07-12-2005, 05:49 AM If it was one distinctive knock probably was a injector. They can and will get loud enough to sound like a rod.Yes they can be intermediate also at flaring up
Have your balance rate checked

Mine has been louder than normal since day 1. Still the same at 40,000 miles. Last year in the mountains (Idaho Springs, MT. Evans area) mine was just a tad louder. Also a little blue smoke on start up (11,000 ft. elev.) and it lost prime three times. Prime was easy once I figured it out, just three pumps on the primer and "walaa". Also noticed more black smoke, but contributed it to the elevation. Everything "normal" when I got back home (700-1,000 ft. elev.)
:)
will w 07-12-2005, 07:35 PM Hey,i see a trend here. Later, Frank! Later, Kelly! etc etc.......Later, Wil!
Frank Blum 07-12-2005, 09:40 PM Thanks for the replies. I will have the balance rate checked if the knock comes back. My dealer is great to work with but they like to hear or see the problem before going to work. I had the surging idle several thousand miles back and could not get to the dealer before it quit. The problem has not come back. Later! Frank
Mitchagain 07-13-2005, 08:21 AM Frank, we got back last weekend from NorthEast AZ. Elevation at 9200-9400 and didn't notice any knock or smoke. Will be headed back up this weekend and will pay a little closer attention to the details. Cool up there, and I'll pay the diesel price to get out of this infernal heat! 115 at the house yesterday @ 5pm, 'sposed to be hotter today!
Frank Blum 07-13-2005, 08:21 PM Only 102 here today. Salmon river in three weeks. Later! Frank
