I just completed the 4600 mile trip pulling a 16 foot Pace cargo trailer.
2005 2500 HD D/A Ext cab
Facts: Truck Stock
Miles 4600
Gal used 383.299
Avg. MPG 12
Speed set at 75 for trip to AZ and 65 for trip back
Wt steering 3700
Wt Drive 4060
Wt trailer axles 4660
Max.. EGT 1300 on one hill 1250 on other occasions
Max. Water 195 Never varied once operating temp was reached
Max. Trans. Temp 195 Start of day reached 150 and then a 2 to 3 hour climb to 195
Max. Air Temp 115 This was in AZ on July 1
Highest fuel price 2.599 in NM
Lowest Fuel price 2.199 in GA
Total Fuel cost $885.56
Max. boost 25 up one mountain.
Observations
1. I drove 950 miles the first day.
2. Spent the next three days driving in and around Springfield, MO
3. Drove 1295 miles June 30, Springfield to Tucson in 19 hours. Took 3 days to return to GA
4. On the 6 mile 6% hill south of Nashville, TN, I had the cruise control set at 75 and the truck did not shift or slow down up the entire hill Mx EGT 1250. I passed everyone. The same results on the mountains in NM and AZ. The truck never slowed down or downshifted going up any mountain
5. Oil pressure ran between 35 and 50 depending on the outside temperature. 15W/40 valvoline
6. Cooling fan ran less than 10% of the time during the day. Fan did not run when temp cooled of at night.
7. I ran most of the miles with cruise control on.
8. When I had it set at 75 MPH the mileage was around 9 to 11 MPG depending on the hills.
9. When I had it set at 65 MPH the mileage was 14.
10. Saw two semi trucks laying on their side. One in NM and the other in TX.
11. I was doing 75 and I got passed by a Gold Wing with training wheels. Not a three wheel but actual outboard wheels on the rear wheel. They were sticking out about 3 feet from the rear axle. I assume the driver was handicapped and could not hold the bike up when stopped. He sure could drive it in the traffic.
12. The DIC engine oil life dropped 40% . I changed the oil before the trip and when I returned. The truck used about ½ quart of oil/
13. I have 75W/140 in the rear end. I changed it when I got back and there was very little steel filings on the magnet plug.
14. Changed the fuel filter today. 11000 miles.
15. I have a 37 foot 5th wheel I have not pulled yet. It is in the background of the first picture. This trip makes me think that I need to improve oil and trans cooling before taking a long trip. The additional weight and drag might make the temps go higher.
16. The Air Conditioner ran at Max all the time. The temp in the cab would get warm and I would have to switch to recirulate for about 5 minutes. This would cool the cab down for about 30 minutes. Outside varied from 73 to 115. When the sun was down the air conditioner could keep up.
17. Fuel tank is too small. I stopped for fuel 24 times. Wife and Dog thought is was about right.
18. The DIC fuel mileage is accurate
19. When I added Standayne to a tank of fuel the EGT ran about 50 degrees hotter than when I did not add. Have not decided if it is worth the cost. I could not tell any changes in the mileage of power as they advertise/
20. Mountain Oysters with cream gravy in Amarillo are great.
21. They are harvesting the red chili peppers in Hatch, NM. Got me a bunch of them. Onions too. I am from GA so I can tell you they are not as sweet as Vidaila’s but they are good.

I am satisfied with the overall performance of the truck. Most of the time I could not tell that the trailer was behind me.

I have not finished my evaluation of the AAAA club. To be a true member I can't just jump into the club without putting lots of thought and time in my evaluation.

That's an excellent write-up. Very honest and to the point. I don't think you could ask for more...

Thanks for the EGT's that helps me a lot since I too run stock.

Ditto, excellent write up.

Im leaving on a 1900 mile trip from PHX,AZ to South Bend, IN (small town just north in MI actually) to pick up my new ('67) Airstream, then turn around and pull it back.

I had 14000 miles on my truck before I started this trip.
Since I got back to GA I have noticed that my mileage while driving the truck unloaded has increased. I am getting 22 hiway at 75mph. and 18 town. All hand caluclated.
