I am at my wits end with the hard to get to, secondary filter on a 1982 6.2L pickup. It continues to leak at the seal between the filter and the housing, the filter is new, the seal is new, tried a couple of replacements without success. Can I ditch the secondary filter and just rely on the main large filter? My 1990 7.3 only had the main filter and none of this secondary BS! I have also lost my automatic glow plug control, relay is brand new, but I get nothing when starting. Yes the fuse is good. Am I better to just set up a manual control on this old a truck, or can a newer controler be adapted without any major headaches? Thanks Mike T

Original primary filters were rated at 12 microns, the secondary at 6 microns I believe. Though the numbers change meaning with different tests.

For a while I was running only a 30 micron filter. Recently I added a secondary filter rated for 10 microns. along with the new base I added a fuel pressure gauge and shut off valve.

I was going to use a 6 micron filter instead, but the base needed was on national backorder for unknown amount of time.

my guess is using just the primary should be okay. if im wrong, since its just a guess..you risk possible damage to the IP and injectors? but I was running a racor 30 micron for quite a long time and no problems that I know of. you could always just add a new base to make up a secondary, and get a larger size filter which may last longer.

yes the filter I added is where the a/c thingy used to be. got the truck with broken hoses so I just took it out and used the room. might add oil bypass filter next to it someday.

I have never had a leak at the secondary filter on a 6.2. I've changed hundreds of them. My dealership sold 146 of these trucks in '82 alone! This puzzles me. It must be the filter adaptor. If someone got ham-fisted on the lines, it could crack the aluminum around the fittings.

When changing filters, I take both lines off and remove the adaptor, chuck it in a vise and change the filter. I fill the filter through the adaptor inlet port until fuel comes running out of the outlet port. I reinstall the adaptor and snug the lines, fire it up and rarely have to restart the engine. Just hold the throttle slightly above idle until it "burps" the remaining air out. The filter and o-ring seal are just bulletproof.

I would find a used adaptor and try that before modifying the system. The I.P. and everything else in the fuel system is calibrated to work with the known restriction of the two fuel filters. I like keeping everything the way is was designed. Just me talking, do what you think is right. Good luck.

It actualy leaks between the filter and the housing, I tightend it per the instructions, then a bit more, still leaks, tried different filters, did the same think, acts like the housing is warped in that area, so for now I just bypassed it. I plan to put a better and easier to service filter system on it in the future. Thanks Mike

Please update us when you pull the filter base out, Im interested to see what the problem is with it. I cant imagine why its leaking there or if its warped, how. maybe it was dropped or something at one time during a change. we have one on a 83 and never heard of it leaking.

They are on ebay as well. bought one to retrofit my truck, but the fittings are weird. ones standard the other ones a weird metric. supply shop didnt have one in stock and said he couldnt order. never seen it before had he. bought a brand new one, a 4 port so i could had fuel pressure gauge. still have the old one with no use now.

I have it pulled out and set aside in the shed, cant see anything with the naked eye, but it leaks something fierce, enough so that it drips off of the underside of the motor and on the ground, as well as leaking down fuel pressure and making startups hard. Not anymore, its a pain in the a-- to get to back there, would hate to have to change it on the side of the road, I plan to put duel filers on the passenger fender before winter comes, it will also incorperate a fuel heater as it gets quite cold where we live, Erie, PA. Cheers Mike

Where on the fender are you going to mount dual filters? what are you going to do with your primary you have already? are you going to add a second or replace the stock fuel heater?

It was a pain finding room to mount my second filter.
