: Roof Marker light replacement
dbunn 05-31-2010, 02:19 PM I noticed last night that my passenger side roof marker light was out. I started to take it off this morning assuming that it was a simple bulb replacement. Nope! It appears to be an led attached to a circuit board. I didn't take it off since I noticed looking through the lens it was not a regular bulb. Dealership is ordering a replacement under warranty. Sounds like the whole thing is replaced (housing and all). I will post back later if this fixes the issue. Just wanted to let you know that if the light goes out on the newer trucks it may not be an easy fix unless you are "an electrical engineer Mr. Bunker"!
Maybe this actually belongs in electrical?

I would think so

DavidH426 05-31-2010, 03:27 PM "Make GM repace i!". Get use to the LED CAB lights burning out! I have had all 3 replaced( drivers/left, center, right/passanger) 3 times each. I have posted a few times on this. These lights are not worth a DAMN! As soon as I notice 1 out off to dealer GM doesnt care to fix the problem then GM can keep relacing the lights. After 3 years or 36,000 which ever is first it going to cost you. It's a never ending PIA!

dbunn 05-31-2010, 08:06 PM Thanks Joe. I didn't think about it until after I hit submit. I edited it later feeling like a dork.
David that sounds like bad news - That is unfortunate too. I guess the LED quality isn't up to par. I have read other threads with LED issues and it seems that the quality varies widely.
Next week they will replace it under warranty, but unless somehow I can link it to the powertrain I will be hosed after 3/36.

"EXACTLY!" All you can do is complain to GM. Which does no good. On every customer satisfication survey I state the LED Cab lights are not worth a "DAMN." Just keep all your documentation.
LMMdiesel 06-01-2010, 06:56 PM I haven't had a problem with them other than the passenger side one being stolen in Chicago... (bastards), And then trying to get a new one at the dealer... it's special order and costs $91 :O???
Recon sells a whole set for $100...
dbunn 06-03-2010, 08:02 PM Had it installed. Took about 10 minutes They are mailing the paperwork so I don't know what the part cost or the part number. I noticed it was tricky getting off the roof. It is held in by two spring loaded plastic/metal clips. You have to pry it off in a way or with a tool that will not damage the roof. The guy used a plastic type of prybar that was small and about 6 inches in length with two different style ends. The plastic material was slightly flexible and kind of like what you would find a non stick spatula made out of.
rubipwr 06-04-2010, 04:02 PM ive had GM NBS LEDs put on my 03 now for 3 years and not a problem at all......

If you think the GM ones are junk Recons are about four steps backwards, you get what you pay for.
LMMdiesel 06-05-2010, 01:03 AM i never said the GM ones are junk, they're just expensive :(

ive had my Recon roof lights for about 3 years now and have had zero problems. I actually found the fit and finish much better than OEM

You should be able to get a single side light for less than $91.00, I got a set of three OEM lights from the GM dealer for less than $200 cdn. The Recons cost me about $150.00 with shipping and all three leaked within the first year and Recon would do nothing as far as warranty or replacement.
The problem with the LEDs, OEM and Recon, is you cannot replace just the lamps the complete assembly has to replaced. If you did buy the Recons I don't know if you can buy just one light or you have to get the complete set every time one burns out.
coldfusion 06-15-2010, 04:25 PM I've converted my 2005 CCSB cab lights to LED which is an awesome night-time appearance improvement!
If anyone needs some for 2001-2007 classic, I have a good supply of these LED bulb assemblies that simply twist-lock into the factory hole.
I found the inside of my factory incandescent roof bulbs were all blackened, no wonder they were so dim! LED is an inexpensive upgrade and the appearance WOW factor is worth it at twice the price.
I'm not sure which bulb is in the NBS, I need a donor truck to take apart.

The NBS lights and the Recon LEDs have the LED bulbs as part of a small circuit board inside the housing. The bulb cannot be replaced the whole assembly has to be replaced. In your case you were replacing incandescent bulbs with LEDs.
Incandescent lamps slowly burn off the lamp filament with age and that is what coats the inside of the bulb black. If you notice the black will be on the top or upside of the lamp only.

Sounds like a good alternative would be to buy a set that runs incandescents that you can replace with screw in LED's. Not sure if Recon or Pacer or someone makes the NBS units with regular bulbs... anyone know?
