Does anybody know if AZ (Maricopa Country) requires a Catalytic convertor on a 95 6.5L Chevy dually. I would like to just delete it without going to a full exhaust exchange (at least for now).

I'm browsing www.azdeq.gov and www.azdot.gov

And i'm not finding much, except that if you live in or commute to Phoenix or Tuscon, your definitely not exempt.

Try this page...www.azdeq.gov/environ/air/vei/diesel.html

Here we go, apparently if you don't live in an emissions controlled zip code, being the metro area of Tuscon and Phoenix, then you are eligible, if not already exempt from emissions testing.

I see no mention anywhere about catalytic converters.

2000 6.5 - Are you replacing your CAT because it had a CAT or because you know that you have to have one in Maricopa? - I am in Gilbert.

I live in Queen Creek (Pinal county side) and I spent some time on the phone with AZDOT regarding my 6.5L. According to them, ALL diesels who live or commute to the area that are outlined in the link that TDG provided are REQUIRED to have emissions tested every year and part of the test is a physical inspection to verify that a cat is intact. As of now, I am running without, but I have until October to get it back in....temporarily.

Thanks jmkglloyd. I spoke to a diesel mechanic who worked on my truck and he told me that as you stated I need to keep my cat but that it just needs to be seen. I can hollow it out and it will not make any difference to the emissions.

I just called the shop that does most of my mechanical work and he told me he would NOT install my gutted cat for liability issues, therefore I just popped out about a buck 40 on something I gutted and can't use.(unless I put it in myself). It's too hot outside rite now. 117 today.

I would probably take it to a weld shop as opposed to a "muffler" shop. But then at 117F outside, you would only need some filler wire to do it yourself :)

What I do with mine when I make it road legal, as local laws don't matter, it is a Federal offense to remove that what was installed from factory to protect the environment.

Anyway using the old crushed down pipe flange cut off with the studs knocked out of it, I welded it to a piece of JC Whitney stainless flex exhaust pipe and made a "cat test pipe" which also comes in handy as a off road performance improver so cat can be bypassed for off road use, or replaced when conforming to various state & local statutes.

Then on non flanged end I used a Whitneys 360 wrap around stainless exhaust pipe clamp, kind of like Kartate Kid movie line, "Cat on Cat off" (Wax on Wax Off  ) flange end one side of the cat and wrap clamp the other end. Best of both worlds legal & performance configurations.
