: Bad Stepper Motor After TDCO Learn?

So, I couldn't leave well enough alone. I have Autoenginuity and made the tools to turn the pump. I wanted the magical -1.94. Before I did anything it was showing
-0.44. I moved the pump just a smidge to the drivers side and had AE do the relearn. It went to 2.64 !

At first I didn't notice that it wasn't showing the minus sign so I assumed I just went too far. So, I set the pump back to my original marks but that made the base timing around 1.0. (and it ran like crap, lots of white smoke and keep setting codes and the light)

Long story short, I now have the pump as far to the driver's side as possible which is about 1/8" or more from my original marks. This brought the base timing back to roughly 3.5. I did the relearn again but it only went from 2.64 to 1.5. I have the P0216 code but not 34. The truck seems to start and run fine this way. I think AE will still show the P0216 code but does not bring the light on.

I read another thread on hear where I guy just did the relearn without even moving the pump and his also went to 2.64. He replaced the stepper motor and all was good. My understanding is, is that when the relearn is done the PCM might run the stepper motor through its full range before settling down on the final valvue. Apparently an older unit may get stuck at one end of it's range of movement.

I dearly hope this is the problem as I'm leaving on vacation next Sat. I still have time to order and replace the stepper motor and hope this is the problem.

Do you think I headed down the right path here?
(I really didn't need this now. I still have a power steering hose to replace too.)

It's been suggested to me in a PM from another member and I also read in another thread here that a bad PMD might be causing the out of spec timing code. If so, then why would this show up only during an attempt at TDCO relearn. It was suggested on here somewhere that the PCM does a relearn anyway every 50 starts. So I thinking that if this was going to happen due to a bad PMD it may have already happened during one of these regularly sceduled relearn attempts by the PCM.

Both my desired and actual are around 10 point something. If they are both the same should this indicate that the stepper motor is actually functioning properly?

I regularly spend hours a week reading on these forums and when I have a problem or concern I spend even more hours reading to try to figure these things out before posting here. But again, I'm pressed for time and looking for help.

Thanks

So, I just had AE hooked up again. Currently no codes showing what so ever. With temp at 192 Time Set showed between about 3.0 and 3.6 but mostly around the higher end of that range. Desired and Actual both about 11 and would increase together when given increase in rpm. TDCO at +1.5 (where I left it yesterday, still with pump hard over to driver's side) Does not increase with rpm. Attempted relearn went to 1.58, another relearn to 1.78 and yet another to 1.76.

Poking around in some other sensor outputs I see Crank Ref Missed mostly at "0" but would sometimes flash a "1". And Inj Pump Cam Ref Missed always showing "1". However, I believe I remember seeing these years ago when I first hooked up AE to this truck.

I had the truck out for about a one hour round trip earlier today. Seemed to run fine but also seemed that EGTs would climb higher and faster than normal, unless I'm just being paranoid.

I know, you'll all want me to go through the entire check list and I will if I have to but I'm hoping that this is enough info for now so that you guys can help me figure this out.

Thanks Again,

Kinda odd?
See what happens with the KOKO methode.Use AE to monitor.
Did you happen to nick the steppermotor connector by chance, poor connection?

I remembered something that happened when I originally made this attempt. It's probably critical and may be a clue to my problem. I had my high idle switch on at one point to make sure the engine was up to full temp. I remember that I brain farted and either attempted a time set or a relearn with the idle just under 1100 rpm. This is when things got crazy and the really rough running started.

I believe my stepper motor is probably functioning. It was just cool enough in the garage today that it high idled slightly on start up and I could hear it step down as it warmed up.

I have a new PMD on order and will try that and see what happens. Silver65burb had a very similar issue and it turned out to be his PMD.
