I have looked all over for how to change out the front diff oil. Please, can anyone give me a step by step of how to. Thanks.

take down the skid plate, drain plug will be on the lower driver side, fill plug is directly above. drain fluid then refill until fluid runs out the top hole. should be right around 2 qts.

Also don't forget to wear some rubber gloves as the gear oil is the nastiest smelling thing I've come across...

While you are at it you also might want to change to the white vent cap if you are going to switch over to synthetic.

My 2003 came from the factory with the white vent cap, so take a look b4 you buy.

What is so special about the "white vent cap?"

The white vent cap is designed to prevent leaking around the vent seal when using synthetic gear oil. The black cap, (from 2001 - and I thought to about April 2004) is intended for only conventional oil. The black cap may react to synthetic fluid and eventually leak.

There are a couple of TSBs posted somewhere covering this. Trucks in cold climates had trouble going into four wheel drive with conventional gear oil in the front. GM now puts synthetic in the front to solve the problem. They had to change to the white vent cap to handle the change to synthetics.

All this being said, there are some notes posted from folks saying they are using synthetic oils and a black vent cap, and have not had any problems with leaks.

Is this vent cap easily replaceable?

Although I haven't changed mine (still running the original black one on syn lube for 80,000 miles+ and three years) - it's right up top of the diff on the driver's side. has the diff vent hose pushed onto a nipple in the center of the cap and a large hex molded in that can be gripped with a large pair of Channel-Locks or even a big Crescent. Hasn't been necessary for me, but should be a very easy R&R.

My truck was built in Feb of 2003 (03 model) and it came with the white vent cap. I changed the fluid at 30K and 60K, the stuff coming out at 60K was pretty clean, but I only use 4WD during the winter months so it doesn't get nearly the workout that that the rear diff/fluid gets.

What is everyone using when they change the front diff oil? I've heard everything from 75w-90w(grape juice) to Transynd ATF.

79 90w syn(grape juice, mobil 1 redline ect.) would be my choice or regular 80 90w. Definatly NOT ATF!!!!

Torque the new vent cap to 18 ft lbs with 24mm deep socket, (15/16 inch deep will work) , with 6 or 9 inch extention.

Super dumb question here but isn't your front differential turning full time whether in 4wd or not?
