: Exhaust Drone in Cab.....opinions please :)
achalmersman 05-25-2010, 02:44 PM ok. I bought a truck with a 4" exhaust on it already. Muffler is unmarked. I hate the cabin drone and its really bad when towing. I have been assured that a ceramic packed Banks Monster muffler will be quiet when driving. Its very expensive. Does anybody have any cheaper options that they reccomend? I dont want cabin drone. I cant stress that enough. If I have to pay what banks is asking so be it, but it will have to wait. I drove a customers LLY with a magnaflow and it sounded pretty quiet in cab. What I am asking is this: Is there any more affordable alternative to the Banks Monster that will be quiet in cab, and still last? Please Please dont start a "Banks is ovepriced blah blah blah" thread. I know they are high. And I know they have R&D and advertising to pay for. I know the costs, Im asking if there are alternatives, and approximate costs. Opinions are appreciated, expeirence is preffered. Thanks in advance guys, Andrew
ethalienhosh 05-25-2010, 05:31 PM Back in '05 I put an MBRP 4" Down tube back exhaust system (Cat delete). The annoying drone is gone in my opinion.
Do you have a Cat on your LB7? (big cylinder resonator looking thingy directly below the cab. located between the four bolt flange and the up turn to the motor), I know some did and some didn't. If you do, that is most likely your problem. I have heard that MBRP sells just the Cat delete pipe. If they do and you just get that, I am sure it will save you a bundle and should make you happy. IMO the muffler shouldn't be causing the drone.
Sorry I have no info on pricing or other exhaust systems.
javelina80 05-25-2010, 05:47 PM Have you checked your connection at the flange? Checked connections all the way down the pipe? Checked for holes? I have no cat no muffler, and have no drone in the cab at all speeds. Even towing heavy. Granted it is a little louder in the cab at certain RPM's, but no annoying drone. Check your connections all the way down the pipe. Where are you located?
achalmersman 05-25-2010, 06:01 PM I have no cat. I have no leaks, and I am in DE. I am wondering if this muffler is actually making noise resonate and causing it to drone worse than straight pipes. I have a buddy with a lb7 dually and he has straight pipes. His was louder when on it, but I actually think mine is more annoying while driving. Perhaps I will just put a piece of straight pipe in before i spend 300 bucks on a lone muffler :(
achalmersman 05-25-2010, 06:12 PM To clafiry: I have 4" all the way to the stock turbo downpiep. There is some sort of 5" tip with little holes on the inside. How much effect does the tip have on the sound? As far as drone I figured harldy any.
The drone is so bad it is difficult to even talk to people in the backseat when towing
I need recomendations.....magnaflow? Corsa (equally as expensive?) if I dont do straight pipe.....Straight pipe may be a cheap trial though :)
DSTRBD 05-25-2010, 06:16 PM I dont know if the Banks muffler will eliminate the drone completely, but I bet it will help. Drone can be a bit of a PITA to say the least, some people just cant seem to get rid of it no matter what they do. A large muffler will help and a resonator on the front pipe will help even more.
Paul Clancy 05-27-2010, 10:15 PM What about back to a stock setup? I went to a 4" on my 02 and regretted it, mind numbing drone. Went to a larger muff - still some drone - not as bad but not as good as stock. I did notice more drone without the tip so it has some effect. New truck will stay stock for sure. Corsa has a rep for quiet.
achalmersman 05-28-2010, 12:12 AM Na. Cant see spending money to go back to stock lol. Especially since I will be putting a 6-gun on it later this summer. Im going to talk to a friend of mine that does exhaust work. Then I might just wind up having to cough up $300 for a monster :(
jstncse 05-28-2010, 12:21 AM I want to try the quiet pipe from Diamond Eye
tytan 05-28-2010, 12:45 AM I have the Corsa 4" cat back and it sounds completely stock in the cab with no drone at all. Mine still has the cat where yours does not so this may affect the sound level.
Kiwi Ed 05-30-2010, 05:03 AM I just ordered a Corsa (for Duramax) muffler only, $264.83 USD incl. free freight (in the US) from here - StreetSideAuto.com wont have it for a while, will report when I get it.

^^ awesome please don't forget.
Gearhead1 06-02-2010, 01:39 PM My Banks Monster turbo back has minimal drone under all driving conditions. It sounds mean and doesn't give me headache or make my ears bleed. Have you tried inverting your muffler? You can do this with some mufflers to quiet them, that is if your muffler is clamped and not welded.
Clm7214 06-02-2010, 01:50 PM I want to try the quiet pipe from Diamond Eye
I have the Diamond Eye 4" with muffler, resonator, and downpipe. It is almost stock inside, but sounds very nice when you roll the windows down. Not even a hint of drone. I wouldn't change it for anything.
willis_bud2 06-02-2010, 02:03 PM I recommend the Aeroturbine mufflers. I have a diamond eye 4" exhaust w/ the aeroturbine 4040 muffler and mbrp 12" tip and have little to no drone. IMO it sounds great. Deep, low rumble and plenty of turbo whistle:cool:
The mufflers run around $138

Now that is what I wanted to know:cool2:
