Last year, the compressor was cutting in and out. I charged it at the auto hobby shop and got it off the low pressure switch.

This year, it's started to cycle again but the more troubling part is the thing makes a rattling sound like a dozen ball bearings in an empty soda can. At 130,000 miles, I think it's about done. I'm thinking of evacuating the system and replacing the compressor and clutch then recharging.

Am I missing anything?

It sounds like mine did when the a/c compressor clutch was going out. I looked into replacing the clutch which can be done but never got that far. The compressor ended up locking up (may not have been related to the clutch noise)and when it did it smoked the Serpintine belt.I bought a rebuilt Compressor from Napa for around $200.00.
I guess you know you also have a freon leak (it may or may not be at the compressor). I bought a set of Guages and a vac. pump from Harbor freight for about $100.00 with a 20% of coupon.

Hope this helps,

Mike

One more thing Dan, Your compressor may be different than mine, but look on the rear of it for a high pressure switch. I found out the hard way that the new one did not have the switch, just a plug, and I could not get the switch out of the old compressor (their is a clip holding it in but the switch is mostly plastic but the metal parts were rusted to the compressor), Auto Zone had the Switch for about $20.00.

Evacuate and replace. If you can do it all yourself, like it sounds like you can, it's not that big of a job. You'll spend more dinking around with it than replacing it would cost.

I'm from PHX and while I'm not the best overall mechanic I know AC!

A ruptured disk at c4/c5 and a bulging one at c5/c6 with corresponding paralysis resulted in a trip to the local Chevy dealer and a lifetime warranty.

My truck had surgery; I'm next.

Sorry to hear that, hope things go well.
