How fast do you drive when towing and do you leave it in drive or the manual shift

depends on the load usually speed limit or a little better. and drive and tow haul mode and let it do its thing.

The load and road conditions determine everything. If it's my bassboat, it is usually the speed limit if the conditions are dry. If it's the 37' 5er, it's at or below the speed limit with a maximum speed of 65 MPH.

I try to keep my RPMs about 1600-1800.
Tow mode auto only.

I use T/H auto, it works well and the faster you go the more drag you get depending on the towed vehicle. (The higher the drag the lower the mpg) A maximum of 65 mph is a good guide since most trailer tires are rated to this speed and you don't need tire failures at high speed.

I tow a 37` fifth wheel at about 13k. I actually called Allison and they said T/H in drive (6th), cruise control and let it go. I have tried this and it does not shift down and tranny temps are good.

I tow a 10k# trailer and I tow at any speed on the freeway. I keep it in T/H except when I am passing I sometimes will drop it in manual just to get a little more millage, and for passing a little more power.

Pretty much the same as above, but I drive w/ traffic depending on the load I have. I don't worry about mileage too much when on my big trips as I budget for the extra fuel most of the time. I know that I will be running 70-80 most of the time, weather/traffic/roads permitting. The old girl does real good when she gets wound up.

I tow a 37' 4 slide, (actual length is 39' 6") loaded out to around 14,500# and I get my best mpg running at 55-62 mph and feel I have better control over my truck and the 5er at that speed per chance I need to make an evasive maneuver or have to come to a sudden stop. A lot of trailer tires are speed rated and should be used accordingly.

62/63 MPH in T/H mode. That speed gets the Allison in 6th gear and gives reasonable MPG.

Same here, no more than 65 mph...

.....I meant to add to my earlier post that I use tow/haul probably 98% of the time. Towing in the mountains of WV, TN, SC, VA & NC practically demands it. Several weeks ago on a trip to Myrtle beach, once I got into the "flatlands", while running 55-60mph, I took it out of Tow/Haul except when braking or starting out from a stop. Even used Cruise control, though in the mountains, only time I've used that is when going down hill, it actually works pretty good in the braking aspect of the D/A combo.

On big grades I manually shift-
Other than that I leave it in tow/haul and let it do it's thing. Typically I run about 3-4 miles an hour above the speed limit.

At 25K GCW I use tow/haul and cruise on flat/gently rolling terrain at 65mph. Hilly/steep hills I use manual mode and anticipate which gear is best for the steepness of grade.

When towing my Toy Hauler I'll run 60 to 65.. I use the toy haul mode. I only really use the manual option while climbing or if I'm fighting engine and trans temps..

Towing my 5th wheel TH my GC is around 23K so I run 60-65 mph in T/H with the cruise on if on the flats. When I have to go over (or descend) the pass to the High Desert north of my area I will shift manually for better engine braking. I also like to lock it in a gear when climbing.

I built mine to go fast and pull hard and that's what i do, so im usually high enough in the power band that I don't need to downshift to maintain speed. Always in t/h loaded unless im either on a stout grade or fighting egts and need more rpms.

In my dually with any load at or below 65 mph. Just to keep the mpg's up. But normally I go about 62 mph

With the Excursion (6L PSD) I still go 65 or at 2200 rpms which ever comes first. Best fuel eco. and it is not way to slow.

Other wise just be wise make sure trailer brakes work, tires are aired, and most important for me and my truck WATCH the temps dude! Over heating is not good.

We pull a 35' 5th wheel toy hauler most of the time with ours. When my wife takes the rig she uses tow/haul mode and auto. Yes guys, she pulls this rig more than I do and most of the time by herself!!! Sometimes her mother goes with her too. She says she likes to keep it simple and let the truck decide when it's time to shift. She also uses cruise control. She will use the manual mode if there are some steep grades.

When I drive I like using tow/haul and manual, especially in the mountains or highways with grades. I also use crusie control too.

Since the toy hauler has tires limited to 65 mph we keep it right at that.

with camper no more than 70 now I have the aux radiator
with race trailer..as fast as the caravan of others are going..I follow along 65-75 usually. I like running 65 and showing the Ford boys with gassers my mileage compared to theirs...lol

I run tow mode always...but.....in the mountains going downhill...I will sometimes turn tow mode off so trans doesn't downshift and redline the tach
